I am sure that this has been covered before, but i have looked through a lot of the old pages on the forum and i cant find what i'm looking for so here goes...

I am trying to compile a parts list/and approximate pricing for a T5 swap from a C4.
- I will most likely replace the rear end to an 8" with 3.5 + gears. What is a good year/model donor car? Will 3.5" + rear gears ruin the cars low rpm highway cruising?
- I will have to hang a clutch/clutch pedal assembly. Do you recommend the cable conversion kit out of NPD? or is it possible to use a donor vehicle for this as well. I will also need the pedal hanging assemble for under the dash.
- For the drive shaft, I want to save my current one, so what car is a good one to steal one from, that will work with the 8"?

I think that budgeting around $1300 for this swap should hopefully prove sufficient? Is this a difficult thing to do? (I'm 17...I rebuilt the motor myself, so how does it compare?)

sorry about all of the questions, but, like everyone else, i'm trying to plan my next major mod. I think that with the T5 i could then run a HOT cam and totally improve the car's performance....
thanks much guys

Note that there are two types of T5. The cheep and friendly Non-World Class (NWC) found behind fours, and the tough World Class (WC) found behind V8's.

The non-World Class 4-cylinder T5's from Fox body Fairmonts and Mustangs, Rangers pickups are the cheapest, but they do have a stump puller first gear which is way to low for a 3.5:1 diff. If you use the more expensive Mustang LX and GT World Class V8 T5's, you get much closer ratios which work very well with 3.5:1 gears. But they cost a packet. Chevy Camaro T5's have a wacky 10 degree tilt, but the ratios are better.

Over here in Aussie, the sixes ran a non-World Class T5 with local made non-world Class gearsets which had the same ratios as the US V8's. The local Holden and Falcon V8's got imported T5 USA-built gear sets with much closer ratios.

If you decide to go the easy 4-cyl, NWC route, then do yourself a favor and go for nothing lower than a 3.2:1 gear set because of the overall first gear issue. You could even go 2.79, and enjoy the long forth and fifth ratios. Either way, beg steel borrow. If you must have a manual, a T5 is a good bit of kit, and people like Al, RickSmol and co have an unbeatable amount of advice to share. Rick has even posted the full 80 odd page PDF file on how to rebuild anything from a NWC to a WC trans.

Compared to rebuildling an engine, a T5 swap in a 65-66 mustang is simple.

$1300 should be fine, even if you decide to go with a V-8 T5. I went with the 4 cylinder T5 for now. Only cost me $250. A good V-8 T5 is any where from $500-1200, depending on condition. The 4 cylinder will do fine for me for now. With a 3.50:1 rear...the 1st gear will be short, almost useless. Even with a 3.20:1 rear I have, 1st gear is quick (ask Al). By the time I let my foot off of the clutch from a start...I'm pretty much shifting into 2nd. Also the final overdrive gear may be too high for a 3.50:1.

Here is a chart:

The chart also give max torque figures, so you can kind of think about what your final power will be and see if the 4 cylinder T5 will work for you.

Here is a good article about the swap. It is definitely a two person (or one person with a tranny jack) job to get the T5 in there.

You'll need the following (from memory):

1) T5 Clutch Disc
2) New Pressure plate (might as well since you are there)
3) T5 (well duh... ;) )
4) T5 transmission Crossmember (make your own or buy)
5) T5 Transmission Mount
6) T5 Slip Yoke
7) Drive Shave Modifications
8) Adaptor Plate (Al makes a nice one) or T5 Bell (depending on what year your 6 is).
9) Flywheel resurfaced
10) T5 pilot Bushing

I think that is most of it.

so what all is involved in converting from an AUTO to MANUAL. I'll have to obviously hang a clutch/pedal, etc. Any suggestions about this?? Where to get the parts?
Oh yea... I have stock 7.25 rear with 2.77 rear gears...will this work with the T5 so i don't have to change rears??
thanks guys, you've REALLY helped out
