hey guys i just inherited a five speed manual gearbox to replace the 3 speed auto in my xf ute. the gearbox is in good nick but it needs a flywheel... ( no drama) my query is, is it hard to change over to manual from auto. what is involved?

You need pedals, flywheel, clutch (and cable), gearbox. You also need to buy a pilot (spigot) bearing for the rear of the crankshaft.

Basic procedure:

- Remove the existing auto trans and drive plate.
- Install the spigot bearing in the rear of the crankshaft.
- Install the flywheel.
- Install the clutch and centre the friction plate.
- Install the gearbox.
- Install the pedals and hook up clutch cable.[/list]

Things to consider (in other words I don't know):

- Tailshaft length. You may need to get the right one for the gearbox and model (ute).
- Gearbox linkage. If T-bar probably no worries, maybe some cutting.
- Routing the clutch cable through the firewall. You may need to fabricate a bracket to get the right angle wrt the clutch pedal; your auto may have no hole at all in the firewall, I'm not sure.
- Speedo sender gearing. May need to match the diff you have.

I've never done this conversion, but I have installed an engine from an auto in my manual wagon. Key thing is to investigate what you'll need and make sure you have everything before you start.

i cant remember,
its out an xf ute (the same as mine ) but it was bolted to a cast iron head crossflow, and mine is an alloy, i dont think there is any differance betwwen the blocks, is there?

No worries bolting up.
Did you get the other stuff you need from the ute (flywheel, clutch, tailshaft)? Otherwise you have a bit of shopping to do.

The tranny is easy to identify as said above. If it has the nylon screw-in shifter then it's the 5-speed version of the 4-speed (if that makes sense). If it has the bolt down shifter it's the sort-after T5.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (quite likely).

im not sure coz i forgot to have a look at it (its in the shed at work) but given its origins id say its a borg warner

yeah i checked it out and its a borg warner... the shifter is bolt in and there is no giant 5 cast into it...

so has anyone done something like this before? what happened? was it a drama?
