Point gap= too small
Plug gap= too big
Lesson- don't assume it was installed right by the guy before me.
Fixed points and plug gaps to stock specs. Adjusted the idle mixture with a vacuum gauge (found max vacuum, and where it drops off to either side (rich/lean) and tried to split the difference) Vac came up to 20" Hg. Good there. Adjusted the idle speed. Reset timing from 6 to about 14 degrees (near as I could read).
Drove around the block and it seemed much better. Less hesitation under acceleration. Almost felt like a car. Then it died, suddenly.
Checked under the hood- gas leak around carby. Get fire exiguisher from inside car, just in case. Pulled the air cleaner and found the inline fuel filter has come loose where it screws into the carb. Mopped up excess fuel. Tightened it back down, got if fired back up. Finished the circuit around the block.
It's only a 1/4 mile, but at least if felt better. I'd like to figure out why the formerly tight fuel filter became loose. If this is a continuing problem, it's bad. I think it's time for a copper crush washer.
Once I've sorted the fuel filter issue to my satisfaction, I'll try to get it out for a little more of a drive. It's coming close to being a decent runner. If it holds together, I'll put off the electronic ignition until the head swap. Then I can get down to the business of making it fast.
