Hey guys,
My friend recently blew his motor and had a guy he knew put in a new one out of a 70 comet I believe. The head, carb and distributor we re-used from his 67 motor. He went off to the Navy and left the car sitting and is coming home soon so I wanted to get it running for him. The guy that did it for him got the motor in there fine, but it doesnt run. I spent all day yesterday screwin around and got it running but it still sucks. Please help guys. What can I do and please, I am very new to this so tell me in the "Tuning for idiots" version. I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!! Oh, its a 200ci.

You have to give us some more information...

What is it doing? Not doing?
What have you checked? Not checked?
Where are the areas you are not sure about?

There literally could be a dozen or more reasons why it will not run?

Best thing to do is go over each area and make sure you are good with each system...

Fuel.. are you getting fuel to the carb? Is it clean and good fuel? Has the car been sitting outside? or inside?
Ignition? Are you getting spark? pull the number one plug, hook the wire back to it, then hold it close to the fender or the block and give the car a crank... be careful. Does it spark?

Do you have stock Distributor and ignition? Petronix? Duraspark? Is the timing set correctly? one of the most common mistakes is having the distributor out of timing range and the engine will not start? Put the engine at TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke.. and verify the rotor is pointing at number one wire on TDC... (To do this pull the number one plug, loosen all the other plugs, get a breaker bar and socket on the balancer and rotate the engine over by hand (clockwise) until the piston in number one comes up and pushes air out of the spark openning, you can put your other finger over the hole, or lean down and use your nose. like I do, when the piston is on the compression stroke it will push air up and out of the spark plug hole... as you come to Top Dead Center, watch the marks on the balancer and line them up with the O/TDC on the timing marker...) then pull the distributor cap and your rotor should be pointing straight at the number one plug wire... if it points to the engine, you are 180 out, if it points to anywhere else you are off... pull and re-insert to line up with one, or rotate all the plug wires so that the number one wire is where the rotor points.)

Check all the spark wires and make sure they are in the correct firing order.
Make sure you have no Vacume leaks and that all the unused vacume ports are plugged.

Is it an Auto or Manual? Is the tranny vac line secure if it is Auto? check the vacume and timing and ignition carefully...

if everything there is OK, then move on to time it and tune the carb.
Get a timing light in there and set initial to 12-15 degrees at idle with all the vacume ports plugged, adjust idle speed for your engine and tranny, then re-check the timing, adjust the Air/Fuel misture setting by slowly turning the screw in till the rpms drop then back off 1/4 turn out from there...
check and adjust any movements in the timing after you do this, repeat the process if necessary until the engine idles at the right RPM with the right fuel mixture, and the correct timing.
Then hook up the plugged vacume lines and off you go.

If you are running stock points and ignition, check the dwell, and make sure the distributor is set right...

Do you have a manual, or even a chiltons book for the car? that would help out a lot in the tune-up area...

Does it have an Autolite carb? Carter? dual or single advance distributor?

Just some basics.

You should have some information about the timing, vacume pressure?, and rpm ranges... what are your idle readings... how much advance are you running right now... how much vacume at idle? is it stable? and what rpm are you running at?

There is no fast cure to the tune-up and driveability of these engines... each one likes things a bit different... sometimes, it breaks down to making fine adjustments and road testing...

Give me as much info as you have and we'll take it from there.

Sorry bout the no info, lol
It runs....
I have gotten it running and I even drove it, but it is slooooow and it stumbles when in idle and I rev on it. When I was driving it, it didnt stall, but felt like it would a couple times when at a stop. Like i said, the motor is rebuilt and it was tuned up by the guy that did i, but no very well and it has sat for a couple months in a garage. I would like to know how to adjust the carb pretty much for right now. The rest he can fiure out when he gets home from Boot camp.
