Vacuum Hose

Later model engines used a breather cap that had a hose leading to the air cleaner. Air was drawn in through a separate filter inside the assembly. If you had excessive blowby, the oily fumes were sucked into the carb, instead of coating your valve cover. 8)

No they are probably not related...

A "Stuck" valve might reduce your power slightly... but it would not shut the engine down...

That sounds like another carb problem altogether...

I'll install the carb and see how it works with a a new PCV valve and hose.

Now I'm going to get paid mechanic :)

Thanks, everyone.

Make sure the aluminum carb adapter is clean too. It gets gunked up and the hole there gets clogged.

Yes, will clean the adaptor myself. I noticed the mechanic didn't even replace the adaptor gasket :( So it's possible that he didn't clean the inside of the adaptor. Thanks.

Thanks BigRedUsa, hopefully now that my compression problem on #6 has been solved it will cure some of the other issues I have.

Webscorpian,
First of all, i have no degree in mechanics, but the big diff. is i've worked on alot of engines. I've never liked the blow by (a.k.a. valve cover valve and hose) set up. What it does is put inpure air to your carb. It puts your fumes from your crank case to your carb, that isn't always good, not as much O2. I've worked on alot of engines and ended up rerooting the hoses to other places. My 65' mustang has no linkage between carb and valve case vent. It's just a filter on my valve cover. There for the carb doesn't get any foul air, besides for our fouled up nature. :)

similar note....what about running a closed system? a PCV on the valve cover and sealed cap? isn't increased crank case vac good for sealing rings and reducing seal leaks (negative pressure pulls the oil back in)? the only prob I can see is pulling in oil pan gaskets or valvecover gaskets.
