Stupid question, but how do you know if your valves need adjusting. Also on my 67 Falcon i believe you cant adjust the valves you have to replace the push rod with either a larger one or a smaller one,, sound right or no. Does anyone know any other way to do this, without swapping push rods. Thanks guys

HI WEs
Usualy if they need adjusting there well be a clattering noise , like tick, tick, tick. NOW an exhaust manifold leak can make the same sound, So some times people get confused. So get a long screwdriver or even a pice of hose. put one end up against the valve cover and the other end to your ear (if useing a screwdriver put the handle to your ear (duh) ). Listen for then ticking sound. After making sure the sound is in the valve cover remove it and see what you have...
With the year you have you may have adjustable rockers. To adjust them I use this methiod EO-IC.
EO = Exhaust valve just starting to open, = adjust the intake valve on that cylender.
IC = Just as the Intake closes = adjust the exhaust valve on tht cylender.
The adjustment is back the adjusting nut off a little untill you can wiggle the rocker.. wait a sec. and make sure you can still wiggle it as the prusher comes off the lifter spring.. Spin the pushrod with your fingertips, just as you feel tension turn the nut 1/'2 a turn more, do this a couple of times just to make sure its right...
If they are non adjustable then pull the rocker assembly off and pull the push rods one at a time so you know which cylender they came from and roll them on a flat place to see if they are bent.. if you find any replace them...if not all of them..

If that don't cure it then you'll most likely have to pull the head and replace the lifters.. I don't think you can pull them throu the pushrod holes..

Good Luck
Tim
