I want to get a pertronix ignitor, but I can't figure out which to order. the 1261 or 1266. I don't have the smog setup, so I assumed it should be the 1266. but I checked out my distrib and according to this picture http://www.falconparts.com/IMAGES/P-1261.JPG my rotorshaft looks like the bottom one - indicating I would need the 1261. Can anybody tell me what I need to order.

sir, the original pertronix I is the one to buy. i myself & many other owners have had stalling problems & other problems with the pertronix II. hope you take my advise. later william

Yeah I was planning on getting the ignitior I (based on cost and from what I have read there was no signifigant improvement for a 6cyl), I am also going to get the flamethrower coil. My question is which model to get. I have a 67 mustang and the pertronix chart has two ignitors for that year. The 1266 is for no smog, the 1261 is for w/smog. But according to another chart I saw my rotorshaft would indicate I need the one with smog, but I dont have smog! So I don't know if there is any difference in the 1261/smog that would cause problems since I don't have smog.

Any ideas?

Buy the Pertronix for the distributor. Its the shaft that matters. The "d" shaft is the solid one, for the earlier "loadomatic" distributors that have only vacuum advance (no mechanical). The distributors are "non smog". Takes the 1266 or 91266

The "C" shaft is found on the later dual advance (vacuum and mechanical) distributors. It has NOTHING to do with the smog (thermactor), but since they arrived on the scene together, these later distributors are referred to as "thermactor" distributors. Do not confuse dual advance with dual vacuum hookups. Dual vac hooks was a later 70's thing.

Probably someone put a later distributor in your engine -- perhaps due to a carb upgrade to a non-loadomatic carb. Anyhow, you need the 1261 or 91261 Ignitor I or Ignitor II.

I don't know what "problems" folks have had with Ignitor II. It has one VERY useful feature -- overload protection. The Ignitor I will burn up if you leave the switch on, with the engine not running. Both Ignitors need 12v to work properly. Many folks have gotten by with 8v (stock coil voltage, in system with a resistor wire), but its not optimal. If you are going to a FT coil, you need 12v for it too, so I cannot see any reason not to go with the Ignitor II. Got mine from a seller on eBay, clearly someone who was a business, for $90. Not bad, and only about $20 more than the Ignitor I -- cheap price for overload protection.

cdherman, what pertronix system do you have in your vehicle?? i have conversed with over a dozen folks who have the pertronix II system & have had sporatic idle problems & stalling. in my perticular case i had a full 12 volts to the coil. the stalling would be erratic.
i finally sent the unit back to virginia mustangs for an exchance to the pertronix I unit. since then i have had no problems.
do you have a pertronix II in your vehicle a this time. if so you must have a good unit, if not don't shoot from the hip with info you have no experience with. not trying to be critical but i have the real facts from experience. lets get this problem resolved. respectfully william

thanks for the info. I think I'll probably go with the pertronix 1. and if I have problems I will definitely let you know!

i agree w/ william i installed p.II & had nothing but trouble, installed I & car runs great. mike
