advancing a 250 cam

The cam gear on a 250 has 42 teeth. Can I advance the cam 4.5 degrees if I'm 4 degrees retarded by jumping one tooth?

360/42=8.5 -4=4.5

Thanks,

Noup. Remember, the cam travels at half the speed of the crank and by jumping one tooth at the cam you'll change timing about 17* (17.143*).

I was afraid of that. Thanks for the info!

By the way I learned today at Gotelli's that Mr. Gasket makes a 4* offset crank key, part no. 988G. I asked for a 390/428 FE and later added when the guys said, "haven't had a request for one of those in several years", "actually I'm looking for a 250 inline 6". And they found a listing for it so I order it. The ones for FE motors are too long.

Mr. Gasket's web site lists that part for a 3.3 L6. I'll find out next week if it fits the 4.1.
