Ok today we got my car started again. We Just installed the headers and an Oz head adapted to 4 barrel holley 8007 carb(390 cfm). We didnt have the Y pipe so we ran just headers. After fixing some fule pump problems it started up really quickly. But i know when it first started up it scared the crap out of me. It was really really loud and it was only at idle. Wow i still cant belive how cool that sounded. My first responce was to make sure the accelrator pedal was all the way up, b/c of adapting the linkage, it was just really really loud. I have ran it directly off the manifold and it was nothing like this i just cant explain how loud it is. I am sure some of you know but for a 17 year old kid's first time hearing a car that loud i know it will be a memorable experance. Ok i will have a video posted soon and some pictures of the car on my site.

I took a quick movie, The sound doesnt really come through with the digital camera's mic but you can see it at least. we put the crap valve cover on there. we have a better one just wanted to protect it for the beggining.

engine running from idle to about 2K rpm.

I was thinking of this....
how safe is it to run with open headers?

I know this has been asked before... but thought it would not hurt.

It all depends on how important your eardrums are to you. Motor wise maybe you'll burn your exhaust valves a little bit sooner, maybe not.

i am not going to be running it this way for long just till i get that Y pipe. i was gonna go dual but i dont have enough $$$$. i all ready have a 2.25 system in the car so i will just hook it up with that. I know that if you run it off straight headers for a long time it can burn out the valves. I saw this thing that was like a valve you put on right after your headers and it split them. then you hooked up a button in the car so you could run straight headers at a push of a button, when you needed that extra sound but then it would go back to the muffler when you wanted to be more sociably accetable.

Those first few seconds on your first start up ,gets the old heart pumping.
Late last year i finally got my falcon cranked up after a full rebuild , a couple of pumps on the gas and cranked it over ,it caught me offgaurd i wasnt expecting it fire that easily.man, open headers on a six get pretty loud .Had a few neighbours poke there head over fence to have a look
while i was running the cam in for about half an hour on open headers.
The funniest thing was my mate was about half a meter in front of the car having a look ,i gave it a quick boot to 4000rpm straight off idle " !@@%%^$^&(* you (*&@%+! scared the **%!@#out of me" .The look on his face  . I couldnt get the smile of my face that day... :D

cheers dave

I have seen them also... although I am not interested in running open headers...
(I have too much into this to burn anything up faster...)

I am just installing the engine in a week or two... and I decided to trailer the car to the exhaust shop and have that run then trailer it home and break it in here in the driveway... I have a complete rebuild... new cam too....

I was just toying with the idea of firing it up open before and running the 20 minute breakin. but I think I will be a patient grasshopper....

I have driven a few cars to the muffler shop with open headers. It is nothing to be excited about. And yes, the ear drums will be hurting..

gotta save my hearing for dick-dale-style surf guitar  8)

playing in front of my fender amp always leaves me half deaf fo a couple hours...

one question - what about backpressure? Don´t regular sixes need some backpressure for proper combustion chamber scavenging?

curious about that...
