Another Distributor Gear & Camshaft Drive Gear Scored

Droped the pan yesterday & installed another melling M65B pump with the pressure spring shortened -.070"
Dropped pressure from 57 psi hot to 50 psi hot. Wanted 45#'s hot but will take 50# for the present.
I will monitor dizzy gear condition. Its a shame the 274 cam is slightly scored, may replace that next spring if wear continues.
The dizzy gear in there now is a used oem ford gear from an old dizzy.
I removed the temporary mechanical guage & reinstalled the sender for the stock dash guage. You can see where the pressure has dropped from its previous readings. Time will tell, Bill

Bill,
were you able to ensure that the oil bleed for the gears from the lifter galley was clear? It's not a big hole, but that's where the gears get all their lube.

Jack, there is no sludge in this engine.
The engine is cleaner than my wife's dishes or cleaner than the board of health.

I pulled the melling M65B pump apart that i had removed & there is no evidence of scoring or binding in the oil pump shaft, gear & rotor & the pump housing.

The next pump i do i will shorten the pressure relief spring to -.100

The present pump spring has been shortened -.070

I hope this will turn the tide on this problem.

Just waiting to rockwell test several gears, so i know what i have. Bill

I'm sure you built it clean! :D

But I didn't even notice that that lube hole existed for the longest time. It's easy to overlook and is a little hard to get to unless the engine is disassembled.

The factory center bushing on their Duraspark Distributors is replaced with a full length bronze oil impregnated bushing to provide increased durability and cure top end timing fluctuation, which is a common problem in these distributors due to the weaker stock bushing.

This was from an advert on ebay with regard to Performance distributors.
It appears that they sell DS2 upgrades:

I'm not a hard-core tech guy, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway for your consideration.

Jackfish, thanks for your concern, by i already have the performance distributor in my engine.
I just put it in a month ago & already shows signs of wear.
However the camshaft gear being scored before the performance distributor installation is the main reason now.
Mike has some more indepth info to be released this weekend on this problem. Thanks Bill
