Any tricks to rebuilding adjustable rockers?

The head I have here has adjustable rockers but I can't get the pedestals to come off, just the rockers on either end. Any tips or tricks to doing this? Heat and penetrating oil? I know to drill out the oil passages on the rockers already. Thanks!!

They should just slide off. Kroil and a good twist. Probably carbon/sludge build up and wear grooves.

So I got the pedestals off with a lot of liquid wrench and a little elbow grease. The shaft looks to be in ok shape but has mild galling/rust etc. Should I take an emory cloth to it? Any ideas?

howdy all:

Galling usually only happens on one side. when reinstalling turn the shaft so that surface is on the opposite side then when it was disassembled- If galling was on the bottom (typically) have that side of the shaft on the top.

Surface rust can be rubbed off with mild abrasive. BUT-

The real work is what is inside the rocker shaft, so be sure to get the gunk on the inside completely scrubbed out. I use shotgun barrel brushes with lots of solvent. Oil travels from the back rocker stand to the front through the shaft so get it clean. Also check the small oil holes in each rocker to make sure they are open.

Let us know how you come out.

Adios, David
