Actually, according to theory and wind tunnel testing, as you move closer to the centreline of an object (that isn't an infinite flat plate), you approach a stagnation point where the oncoming velocity is 0. This is also true for automobiles. It is actually more efficient to have an intake either on the hood (hood scoop) or underneath (like most modern cars these days) for best airflow.
I did a study alongside one of my fluid dynamics courses (cfd) and found that a hood scoop is more efficient than airflow through the grill (i was working on the same 'COI' to install). This was for my '66 stang.
Maybe you could get some sort of ducting to run from the carb bonnet to your filter? Might save you some weight over those sections of tube clamped together.
That air stagnation thing would be true only if air wasn't moving through the radiator. Stagnation would require the air to be dammed up against the shape of the nose of the car, the flow being effected more or less by how that shape actually moves through the air. The actual space that allows air to flow through to the radiator however would have rapid air flow through it at speed and also flow via the radiator fan when at idle. In fact, at idle the front of the car would be the only place where air would be moving! Were there no air passage through there, then your air flow slow/low pressure/no effect thing would be correct.
You are right about all that tube work possibly hindering air flow, but remember that the carb/cylinders can only suck in just so much air. Carbs rarely ever draw even their own CFM rating (refer to the "Pony" carb book regarding CFM ratings). Anything more might add a small unnoticable ram air effect, but what you are really trying to gain here is cooler air, which is why the tube was positioned there in the first place. In that respect, the 'in front of the radiator' system should do the trick better than the 'inside the dog house' one. Most new car designs draw the intake air through the core support or there abouts. Why not put a hole through the core support, an air box behind it, and the cool air tube drawing from the box.
By the way, any '69 Mustang is just plain "cool" no matter what you do !
Yes this is 3" from Spectre, they make all kind of 3" stuff now. I also have a Y Carb Hat that I received from Spectre when I went on the Power Tour in 2007, The owner of Spectre sent me a box of all kind of pipes and couplers to try out in 3".
Just wanted to tell you that my 1969 fastback was the hit of our show mostly because of the engine, thanks Mike, and the Procharger carb hat and cold air plumbing. Mine looks almost exactly like Billr57's set up.
Every time I walked by the car folks were looking and pointing. It runs well also, so a win/win for me.
No kit, while on the Power Tour I was over at the spectre booth and talking to the owner of spectre about what I wanted to do but could not find anything that I liked, he came over to my car and took alot of pictures and told me he would send me some stuff of what he thought I would need and send them to me. pretty cool
