Carb Problems? Timing? Help!!

I just had my head rebuilt on my 66 Bronco 170, autolite 1100, Pertronix ignition. I also rebuilt the carb at the same time. Truck ran great before the teardown. The head just needed to be rebuilt. I kept the same settings on the carb because it ran so good. I put it all back together and it runs like crap. (I can't get it to idle correctly it has terrible surging at low RPM's). I adjusted on the thing until I was blue in the face and nothing. I bought a new float and carb rebuild kit from Pony Carberators and rebuilt it again. It runs a touch better but, I still have a bad surging problem at low RPM's and I can't get it to idle right. I have to pull out the choke a little to get it to idle but then the engine is racing. If I push the choke all the way in it will idle while parked as soon as I take off and then stop it will die. If you keep your foot in the gas it will run fine but, as soon as you let off it will start surging. Ive adjusted everything I can think of to the factory specs and then some. Also, It is sucking alot of air through the carb that it didn't do before. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary

Check for a vacuum leak first. If the carb wasn't adjusted at all, I think that has a high probability of being the problem.

Did you jsut install the pertronix? You might check the timing and advance it to get a more stable idle. Is the vac advance working to give a decent advance at idle?
