For those of you that have done this. How the heck do you get the plugs out of the ends of the shaft. I bought one on Ebay so i could do a real good cleaning on one while still driving the stang.

Thanks,

Andrew

I can, but then where do I get new plugs, are they just like freeze plugs? I don't have the rockers yet as they were an evilbay purchase, but I want to be prepared when they get here.

Yes, just the same type of plug. IIRC, the originals are plain steel because of permanent oil immersion.

I found these on rockauto.com for a `82 Fairmont 200 six. They may be common through all years. You should measure to double check.

Rocker Arm Shaft Plug Set
DORMAN Part # 555007
17/32" O.D. (2 Req.) - Steel {AutoGrade Hardware}
**Sold in packs of 10**
$0.28 ea. / 10 for $2.80

The shipping would be expensive for such a small order but you could probably give the Dorman number to a local parts store and see if they can track them down.

On a similar topic...they also list a:

Rocker Arm Shaft
SEALED POWER Part # RS619
$25.79

I tore apart an early adjustable rocker set to put on a `82 head I'm rebuilding and there is some wear to the bottom of the shaft. Not major but you can feel them with your fingertip. Insides of the rocker arms look pretty good. Would it be smart to replace this shaft or better just to keep the old one?

I'd replace the old one if any wear exists because the price doesn't fight back.

The shaft has a wear indicator where you can check how far it has gone. Most shafts I have seen were totalled, so that is one thing to ALWAYS check while playing with the rockers.

Naturally, the rockers themself do wear too. The hole goes oval...

Surely, you could rebush the rockers if necessary? The older IH motors have factory-installed rocker shaft bushes.
