Custom Intake

Following rbohm's advice I have just taken my first step towards a custom intake to my 170 head. All I did was cut off the top of the log with the carb bracket. I see two options at this point one weld 6 tubes on the head and then weld a plenom to these tubes. Two I could custom fit a larger plenom right on top of the remaining log section. Here's a picture of what I have done so far. Any ideas?

I'm wondering if you could drill and tap the intake ports to lets say 1 1/4" pipe thread and screw in short nipples then go in and blend the port to pipe. At that point it would be easy to fab any style intake you want.... without trying to weld DOM to cast...
