Differences between a 200cid and a 250cid?

hey there guys. my gf bought a 69 mustang a few months ago and wants to get it on the road now for the spring. it has a 6cyl but i'm not sure if its the 200 cid or the 250cid. are there any tell tales signs (in case it isnt original, i gotta look at the paperwork she got with it) which is which? Instead of just checking the casting numbers? I've heard the water pumps have different bolts, IE the 200 has 3 bolts and the 250 has 4 bolts? (I actually need to replace the water pump, so i'm told.)

There are no big differences in the heads. The earlier 250 had larger valves but that's internal. You gotta check the casting numbers. The later 250s and 200s had the same head. What I'm trying to say is, the head ID is irrelevant.

You are right about the waterpump. Also, the 250 is 1.66 inches taller. Check out this page for the other little differences.

Easiest way is to measure from the oil pan lip to the top of the block. A 200 will measure around 8 inches while a 250 will be around 10 inches.

Another quick visual is the a '69 250 will have the starter mounted below the pan line. A 200 will have the starter mounted above it. If the head and block are C9 castings this is a safe bet.
