Electric Fan Advice Needed

I think my next project will be to install an electric fan since I mostly only drive my car on warm days. I have done a search, but I thought I would get fresh input. I have a couple questions.

1) Pusher or puller fan recommended, and does it make any difference?
2) Is there any need for the mechanical fan once I have installed the electric? I don't see any reason to keep it on the car, but I have been very wrong before!
3) Anyone have pictures of an installed electric fan and the different connections and such?
4) Can anyone recommend a quality electric fan I can buy online?

Thanks for any help.

i would think a puller, a pusher would obstruct the rad at low speeds

nope, shouldn't be any need to keep the mechanical

for wiring, i'd just set it up with a temp-sensing relay, you should be able to buy a complete wiring harness for it through Summit or something

as for which fan, check this thread, it's aimed at the big sixes, but hey, what cools a big six will definitely cool a small six

good luck with it!

Hi Ryan-
I installed a 14 inch Derale pusher since there was not enough clearance between my rad and the water pump for the fan. I removed the mechanical fan and the electric fan rarely turns on. I have it start at 200 degrees and go off at 175, but the unit is adjustable and I can choose any settting. I made a "T" connection into the lower rad hose and installed the sensor there. I would have preferred the upper rad hose since hot liquids rise but there is not enough room... I also installed a dash light to go on when the fan turns on - and had to install a diode (in the form of a $4 bridge rectifier from Radio Shack) to prevent the light from turning on when it spun on the freeway.
Anyway, I am quite happy with the setup.
Here is my attempt at a schematic (warning - amateur electical skills here...):
Good luck and stay cool!

8)

1: puller, as evan said a pusher blocks flow to the rad.

2: as long as you have enough airflow you can remove the mechanical fan. as i recall you need around 2100cfm of airflow for the small six.

3: like evan said, complete wiring harnesses as available from a number of sources. i also recommend installing a manual override in case the temp sensor you use fails. also if you have a/c you want to run a wire to the fan relay to turn the fan on when you turn on the a/c.

That was my setup. It's a permacool 16" fan blowing 2100cfm and I also installed a nylon mechanical fan. The electric fan didn't really seem to help much with cooling. Once I finally replaced the exhaust manifold with a set of pacemakers, the engine ran a bit too cold so I removed the electric fan. You can see I'm also running an aftermarket aluminum radiator. It's a generic one from summit that I love. It looks a lot better in my opinion. I think if you get things setup correctly, there really is no need for an electric fan. Over the past couple of months I've been tearing out a lot of junk I've put on the car, I've gotten sick of all the doo-dads and gadgets and I really value simpleness now.

Thanks so much for your replies! My cooling system is working good right now, but I watch the temp creep up some while at stoplights on hot days, then drop when I am driving. I just want to add this so that everything stays at the right temp. Again, all the replies are greatly appreciated.
