Engine Block and CAM Question?

I have about 75,000 miles on my 66 Mustang 200. I am planning on having the head rebuilt, installing Clifford dual outlet headers with port divider, installing rebuilt Holley carb, and thinking about the Clifford 264 CAM. Can I get away with installing the CAM without having the engine block rebuilt? I read in Chiltons that the CAM can be installed without removing the block from the car. Can this be done, and is it a good idea?

If I am not planning to have the block completely rebuilt, other than the CAM, is there anything else I should do to the block while I have the head off?

Yes, you can install a cam with the engine in the car. From what I hear it is hard as hell to do. It generally involves removing some of the front of the car. It's hard enough putting it in with the engine on the stand, much less in the car.

If you do replace the cam, consider replacing you timing chain at the same time since you'll have the timing cover off.

If you are going with Clifford, give yourself about 3 months before even thinking about receiving the parts. They do not have the best track record. Consider other sources for both the headers and the cam. There are many cam sources and a few header sources. Only source for the port divider that I know if is Clifford, but if someone else makes one I do not know.

Good luck.

Port dividers are also available from Autokrafters, but they charge $22.95 as compared to $13.00 from Clifford. I have also heard the Virginia Classic Mustang has them, but don't know their price.

As for cams, I have some on the way and will have them in stock sometime later in the week. Three profiles are similar to the one you are looking at, they are as follows:

264S: 264/264 - 214/214 - .440/.440 - 110*
264D: 264/274 - 208/222 - .453/.480 - 108*
264D: 264/274 - 208/222 - .453/.480 - 110*

Cams are $115, Eaton lifters $48, RAS c/moly pushrods $39, Header $245 for dual out, or $265 for single out ($20 for Y pipe). All parts are in stock (other than the cams) and I can ship as soon as the cams arrive.

Best place to get the Duraspark is from NAPA (from what has been posted here in the past).

You can get the spring, keepers, locks, and pads anywhere, and save yourself some bucks.

Have several referal/testimonials if you are interested. Just let me know and I can e-mail them to you.
