first time I opened an engine

this past weekend I opened my valve cover...I had never done that before. I now see all the things I have only read about.

I am thinking of actually tackling my head change myself...

Good Luck Evan,
I am just one step up the road from you, and I got a lot of help here. A few suggestions.....take your time, bag and label everything, and buy good parts and tools. Also, when you have that head off it is a great time to paint your block, head, and valve cover. I did this when I pulled my head and my engine looks a million times better.

Also, if you can, take some pictures as you go so that you can easily make connections and remember exactly how things looked before you pulled it apart. I wish I had taken some digital pictures because I struggled a bit with how some of the lines were routed.

when u put the valve cover back on only tighten the bolts to 18 ft lbs or you could snap the bolt head off
you could get some of them crome valve cover wing bolts that way you can`t over tighten them there is 7 in all it will cost you about 14 bucks

Actually, factory Ford specs call for 3 - 5 ft lbs torque [at least thru '68] for valve cover bolts. Any tighter than that and you run the risk of distorting the valve cover and creating an oil leak.

this is my first classic stang and we dove right in with an engine rebuild it was the scariest thing not knowing what I was doing and when it was all over and done with the engine started right up and it was actually a beautiful thing and well worth it. now I only wished I had found this web site before so I would have known about the 250 head swap. thats what I am looking into now.

Any one out there in north texas looking to learn how to this. and want a partner to help. I need all the assisstance I can get and I am willing to learn on someone elses car first. I'm better with hands on experience than reading these posts. most of it sounds to complicated, but I'm sure it's nothing.

Its pretty cool you learning all this. The only tip I have for you is. When you start getting frusturated....STOP .....chill out take a break and sit and think. Things go soooo much easier when your not frusturated.
