How did you pump them up? By pumping oil into them? No! They're supposed to give; not become rock hard. No need to fill them beforehand.

To install new lifters, just let them sit in oil for a few minutes, then coat the face with moly assembly lube and install. If you pump them up with an oil can, you can't set the preload. On an engine with non-adjustable rockers, that could mean a valve that's hung open so you get no compression until the lifter has a chance to bleed back down.

Let those pumped up thing sit overnight before you install them. They'll eventually bleed down. when oil starts to circulate, the lifters will fill and maintain a proper preload.
