Fuel Sending Unit Problems

Hey everyone
I installed a new fuel sending unit for my 1966 ford fairlane. Its a 6 cylinder with a manual three in a tree, 2bbl carb. When i turn the key on it just goes to full. The old one did the same thing so i though the sending unit was bad. The voltage regulator on the front of the car i changed with a ford truck that had the 300 into it, same plug and everything and it runs fine with it but my fuel gauge is not working. Some people said there is a constant regulator under the dash for the regulator, i cant not find one under the dash. If someone can give me some insight on what it could be. Thanks

"voltage regulator on the front of the car" is for the Alternator.

"constant regulator under the dash" Yes constant voltage regulator under the dash is for the dash gauges only has nothing to do with the voltage regulator on the front of the car. They are small usually mounted on or next to the gauge cluster. In the Picture is the little rectangle box with two wires you can check the voltage regulator with test light for 12 volts in since your gauge goes to full you know it dose have power and a pulsing signal out. If it pluses okay then you need to check if the wire from sending unit is grounding out somewhere or if one posts of the gauge is grounding to it's metal housing.

Somtimes they are just on the back of the dash (cliped on) will still look the same. You may have to use a mirror or lay on the floor looking at back of dash to see it.

You can pull the dash pod and look straight in. It unscrews and you tilt it forward. Use a flashlight. The CVR is a little brass box the size of a two-piece Chiclets box. If you want to pull the dash pod all the way out, you have to unscrew the speedo cable. It is not hard and you won't break anything if you do.

I pulled the whole dash out, and no voltage regulator on it or near it, the two wires i beleave go to the cluster are just plugged together, and its just for the fuel gauge and constant 12 volts.

That may be part of the problem. One or two of the other gauges run straight off the sender. If the fuel indicator is like on the Mustang, it runs through the CVR. Pinning the wires together was probably just to keep the dash lights on so you can see the speedo and engine temp. Time for a wiring diagram. You can probably find one on line.

 You will need to find and install the CVR then. NAPA used to carry them, or look at wrecking yard many years and models used the same one too.

The Stang houses have them too and I believe they are not too expensive. It's a mechanical system so it doesn't fry like a computer, but they do go bad -- like your original probably did.
