Help! See and Hear my incredible groaning 200.

Any idea what's making this noise?

It only happens when the engine is just getting warmed up and above an idle, between 160 and 200 on the gauge.

Not when it's cold, and not when it's good and warm. It's got a stock 195F thermostat, and runs right below 200 on the cheapie gauge.

It's been doing this ever since I swapped the 200 in, but it's getting more frequent - used to be a minute apart, now it's every couple of seconds.

I've used a heater hose to locate it, and it's coming from in front of the dizzy and just above or inboard of the filter. Oil pump or drive?

Jamyers, I had a similar sound coming from my newly rebuilt motor; a sound that seemed to come and go when idling. What was causing the sound on my motor was at the new PCV valve that goes into my valve cover. I had installed a new PCV valve in valve cover and it was a bit loose in the rubber gromet. I couldn't tell from your video if you have a PCV valve, but you might try pulling out the PCV valve and see if the sound goes away. I ended up just wrapping some electrical tape around the PCV valve neck so that it fit snug in the grommet. This took care of my problem. Maybe your noise is something else; but it would be worth pulling out the PCV valve to see if it goes away.

Run it for a minute or so with the belt off just to make sure its not the waterpump. Sounds to me like some sort of a bearing problem like water pump or maybe distributor shaft bushings?? If its not the waterpump I would yank the dizzy and squirt a bunch of oil in the dizzy so it gets to the top bearing, the bottom usually gets enough but whatever you get to the top will run down.

See if your alternator pulley/fan is loose. Mine made a sound like that when I shut it down, turned out that the nut had somehow backed off a little (probably because it was covered in grease) and the alternator fan was vibrating against the pulley.

What weight oil are you using?Have you tried changing the Oil and Filter? to me it sounds like the Oil Pump Relief Valve. just my .02

i agree with what fordconvert said, it does sound like the distributor bushings are making the noise.

I forgot to mention, the camera is pointing at where the noise seems to be coming from.

OK...

The PCV valve is in the rear of the valve cover and tight, that's not it.

New waterpump (2K miles), and the noise is coming from lower down...pretty sure that's not it, but I'll take the advice and pull the belt just to make sure.

Also a new distributor (2K miles), it's a Dura Spark 1 from Napa. I've had the top apart to mess with the advance springs, it didn't seem to have much/any slop in its bushings - I shot it with lube then, but I'll pull it clear out and and recheck / re-oil its bearings as well.

Radiator and Alternator Fans are both good and tight, as are the alternator and a/c compressor bolts.

I'm currently using Rotella 15W-40, I've used Rotella straight 30W and Havoline 10W-30, I've heard no difference.

Oil Pump relief valve - How hard is it to get to that, and what would I look for?

From where it seems to be coming from, I'm thinking it's somewhere in the distributor / oil pump drives, but I'll eliminate the other things above before digging into the oil pump.

Waterpump bearing is my first suspect or Alt/gen bearing. My Ranchero 200 made the same noise only is was constant; blamed it on the Alt. Swapped motors, same alt., new waterpump and the noise went away. Could have been something altogether with the motor, but I'm sure it was the waterpump.

i think the belt is too tight

OK, finally got some more info on this oddity...

* I got it up to temp for the noise to start, then removed the belt - still making noise.
* Water pump bearings are good, not loose or binding.
* Alternator and A/C compressor bearings are good as well.
* Fan is tight on water pump.
* Pulled the distributor, it's bushing looks great, as does the drive gear. Took a screwdriver and checked for side-play in the oil pump drive, little to none present.

Went back to using a heater hose to try and pinpoint the noise, and now I'm thinking *maybe* the fuel pump drive (grasping at straws?)

It's a pretty new fuel pump, as new as the distributor (myabe a couple of thousand miles on it). It's the style with the large filter on top of the pump.

Are all fuel pumps interchangeable?

Yes, the fuel pumps are interchangeable. Just make sure you put a filter somewhere in the line if you swap to a filterless pump. =D

Yup, this is prolly the 3rd filter in 3K miles - after swapping in the engine of unknown history.

Think I'll pick up another fuel pump and see if it makes a difference.

Do fuel pumps have an internal pressure relief by-pass back to suction?
Just wondering if that could be causing the noise. I'm grasping, because I never really thought about whether or not a fuel pump has a pressure relief.
