holley issues....

accelerator pump changes would not fix gradual movements like that. It is definitely in the circuits.

It had a brass float (from '68 302) but I swapped it for nitrophyl from a later carb (a 1.21)

I also have a 1.08 from a 1984 302 van, I need to take it apart first.

What kind of distributor do you have, are you running full manifold vacuum at idle??? Or does the idle problem start after the vacuum advance starts to come in??

Using full manifold vacuum is necessary especially at idle to the distributor vacuum advance if you have a wilder camshaft than stock.

If the distributor has no effect, you just need to change carburetors.

With this many posts & still no fix you need to seek help from somewhere.

You need to take it to someone who knows the older engines & be prepared to spend some money, probably for a new carburetor.

The problems you describe also pertain to non turbo applications, since you say all your problems are off idle & not full throttle. William

well a new carb isn't in the budget right now...why I had bought the used one in the first place...

I am half tempted to just limp it around for the next 6 weeks until I get my "vacation" and dive into it more then (plus there are a couple speed shops back home....and a heated garage)

edit:

I am running a duraspark hooked up to the log directly and am running a stock replacement cam. it has to be a carb issue as there is no other reason for it. I got a buddy that knows carbs pretty good (helped build dans turbo) so maybe I will drive over ot his place to have him look at it on sunday

Best of luck, i'm sure you will find your problem carburetor related.

Why I asked about the distributor, I installed a duraspark with a MSD direct hookup & the harness had the polarity reversed. The effect was when I would bring in the vacuum advance the engine just went spastic.

I traced the harness wiring & found it reversed, I flip-floped the connections & the duraspark has performed flawess with the MSD-6A since then. I highly recommended this combination for anyone contemplating an ignition change or up-grade. William

this is just my first holley carband the first time away from simple 1bbl such as the 1100. yeah there has been alot of posts on here but half of them have me taking no action as the past 2 weeks was midterms for me so all I could do is post and not do anything else (plus I had a vac leak I had to solve for a couple of those days) and the next three days I am stuck in work FOREVER just sitting online so those days/nights I post alot because I have nothing else to do....kinda like tonight

Take up knitting, young man. You could have a nice warm woollen cap ready for winter's chill. :P

ok I pulled it off again today and looked things over. the only real problem I seem to find is that there is a air vent on the top of the carb next to the air horn. this vent is located on the throttle side of the carb (oposite the choke hole I filled) on the far side of the top (ie the "secondary" side) I sprayed some brake clean in there and it just filled and never drained from anywhere. in the casting you can see where this passageway goes down to the baseplate then cuts over to somewhere else... is this my problem? or is this some unused passage?

I pulled the baseplate off today and didn't find ANY clogged holes. how big should the main bleed holes be? I have been ALL over this carb and seems like nothing changes it!!

btw I was wrong on the PV....it is a 1.5

Has no one answered you about this? 1.5 power valve? Are you definitely sure? I am starting with an 8.5 PV, if it is a 1.5 then that is your problem, no extra fuel until you get the engine redlined. You are running too lean once you start opening up the throttle.

Kirk

ok so I put in a 6.5 PV today....no change in the stumble at all. I might try going back to the 61 jets though just to see if it will run better on them now then it did before.
