Hello Im new to turbos and FSP site. I have a 53 Ford wagon Im putting in a 300 I6 and want to turbo it. I have a turbo from a turbo coupe(warner-ishi IHI turbo). How do I build an exhaust manifold and make it work with a carb. Also Does anything need donr to the motor and if so what. The motor is out of a 85,86 pickup with around 64000 miles. I dont need a super fast motor to start. Will step it up later. Thanks.

when I finally decided to turbo my car I started by asking everyone what works and eventually I decided to read, buy some books and read. But to get you started the turbo you have is NOT going to be a good match fro your engine. I have a similar one on my 200 and it is way too small for my likings. You would need 2 of them to get anywhere but then your just making it more complicated on yourself. Like wallaka said read some stuff and you'll learn some great info! Good luck, Tommy

Here's a thought ... what about using a set of the EFI style exhaust manifolds from one of the later 300s. They're strong, durable, flow pretty well, and you'd only need to fab up either a short set of pipes to connect a small turbo to each one for a twin turbo setup, or a "Y-pipe" to mount one larger turbo. That's got to be easier (and cheaper) than fabbing up a full header, eh?

:)

Ive been told that manifold wont fit my motor. The motor I have is an 85/86. I havent tried yet but have givven it some thought. I need to find another turbo coupe turbo(anyone have one).

For the facts on whether or not the EFI exhaust manifolds will fit on a 300 of that vintage, you should probably ask over in the 240-300 "Big Block" Six Performance section of the forum, but I'm pretty sure you'll be told that they can be used on even the earliest 300s and 240s with no more than a little grinding depending on the intake manifold and accessory brackets being used.

really a pair of ihi turbos off a turbocoupe on a set of split "headers" (EFI manifolds) would be a pretty nice combo. would spool real fast off the line and be able to move enough air to scoot down the road. if you ran the factory EFI intake you could easily plumb both hairdryers into the throttlebody with ease.

are those EFI exhausts cast or fabricated? if they are fabricated you could easily cut off the existing outlet and weld on a 90* bend with a T3 flange (the turbocoupe IHI will directly swap for a T3 for the most part)

edit:

you could also Y-pipe the EFI exhaust or run a J-pipeon your existing with a larger single turbo.

Or you could use the 2.5" single outlet cast manifold from an early HD truck and plumb up a J-pipe to a single T04. Guaranteed bolt on to your block and a lot less fabrication required than with the dual EFI manifolds

They're rather heavy iron castings. Here's an image of a set of them mounted on a 300 engine without any intake. (Image courtesy of one of our other members here.)
