Hey, I having trouble starting my car most times when its had a good run and the motor is abit hot, when it does play up I just start it from the stater motor without a problem, I have change the ignition wires from the starter key twice and clean all the connections but still have the same problem, I tested when it happen with mulitmeter where the wire comes from the neutral starter and plugs into the starter motor it read abit over 12 volts, theres know fuel problem (actually running to rich using more fuel than an F18 uses on take off) its when i turn the key on no go but the lights on the dash lite up its an XE ute with a C4, appreciate any help

Thanks Joip

the xds had a problem with the wire to the starter solenoid actuator becoming hot (ie more resistent ) and in the end also brittle, an xd we had had this problem and we got around this by bridging the starter solenoid with a big screwdrvier, but if you have replaced this wire the problem should not be ocuring , ford rectified this problem by putting a heat sheild on the later ones, apparently

my old xe devveloped this problem we took the starter motor out and dicsovered the contacts in the solenoid were carboned up and the bakelite cap craked ie solenoid buggered, the screwdriver trick was making that work also and would do it only when hot for some reason,

a new solenoid had it working fine again.

I haven't replace any wires that go to the soleniod or the key switch so I'll give that ago, but I do know when I bridge the starter and replace the neutral starter wire its hot, #6 extractor pipe runs extremely close

Thanks Joip

Joip,
Try wiring in a relay.
Everyman and his dog has had to do this to Falcons to get them to start properly.
Use the original ignition wire to power the relay to switch battery power onto the starter.
Gives the relay a full power kick.
If there is nothing wrong with the rest of the starting system this will fix it.
Noel.

Is there any specfic type of relay I have to get or can I pick one up at the wreckers

Thanks Joip

Buy a new generic starter relay for late '60s Fairlane/Falcon V8s. Don't mess around with wrecker parts. Put it near the front upper of the RH shock tower. Get one battery cable shortened to the relay and make a new one to the starter. Run a new heavy gauge (10A) wire from the relay to the starter solenoid with teflon insulation or a fibreglass sheath if pssible. A bit of rooting around, but worth it, as Noel mentions. When you have that solenoid up there, it's convenient to add a terminal block next to it for things like spotties.

Cars used for short hops wear out the key switch faster than country drivers. Most of the people who have starter issues I have known, were potheads (go for a drive every 15 mins...)

Cheers, Adam.
