Improve your MPG!!!

*Advance the initial setting on your distributor.

I'm confused on this one. When I keep my timing closer to stock (around 10*) I get better mileage then when I was advanced to 24*.

I set my idle RPM as low as possible to keep the car running on the cold mornings. Don't wind the gears up.

Funny thing about my volvo, they have it mentioned in the manual that the car will get more mileage with the windows up and AC on vice AC on and all 4 windows down. Wonder if that is true for other cars?

Since a warmer engine's combustion process transfers less heat to the engine, additional heat goes to expansion and exhaust. How hot can we run the 200s? Is 220 the max?

Okay...so the 2nd part is meant to read "AC off and 4 windows down!

jeez...one little typo...

Better not make any mistakes Tim.

One thing that is often overlooked is the electric choke. If your electric choke is not fully open after about a minute, start adjusting.
If you live in a warm area, why do you even need a choke? I live in a relatively mild area and have had the choke removed since early last spring. I may simply install a manual choke this winter, as I only need to run rich for a minute or so when it's "cold".

CobraSix, I think that the AC thing has a whole bunch to do with the type of compressor you have on the vehicle, my Suburban manages to drop about 2 MPH with the AC on, on the highway (don't know about in town, but I'm sure it's worse). The newer vehicles seem to have some much more efficent compressors than before. J

Don't know why but at least both my build ups have ended up with lot of initial advance - seems like these engines love it a lot. GEN1 was initially set up to 14* and I got bad MPG and lazy performance. Set it to over 20* and had great improvement in power and MPG. Currently running GEN2 engine at 23*, centrifugals give 15* more by 3000rpm and vacuum is hooked up to ported vacuum. It accelerates great, nears 23 MPG and the only negative thing (in addition to still poor MPG) is the slight "kicking" at low rpm city cruising, typical to engines with a lot of advance. GEN2 was dynoed at 28* initial, centrifugals 15* and no vacuum hooked.

Well, haven't tried it at 10* so far.

After reading all the posts on fuel economy lately, I decided to try a few changes myself.
First, I dropped my initial timing from 26* to 14*.
Second step was to hook my vacuum advance to direct vacuum from ported (this was done to cure an off idle stumble).
Last of all, I hooked my heat riser intake back up but hooked it to full vacuum. This results in the filter receiving almost entirely hot air from the exhaust manifold, but allows more fresh air from the factory fresh air setup to mix in when I step on the gas harder.
We,ll have to see if it works or not.
