Hey all. Just started up my refurbed 200 engine last week. Newly rebuilt 2100, new 1.6 ratio rocker arms from FSPP, parts store Duraspark II, Pacemaker headers. The log is from a 170. New plugs, new wires.
It runs great at idle, pulls about 19 inches of vacuum and steady. When I hold it at fast idle, or when I hold it against the transmission, it will continue to run fine for several seconds and then it will start stumbling. It's just a little stumble, the vacuum drops maybe an inch and then bounces back up. The longer I keep it there, the more frequent the stumbles get. If I hold it against the transmission long enough, it will eventually sound like it's going to die.
The carb is a 1.14 venturi, and came with 51 jets which I drilled out to 62, thinking the problem was a lean condition. It's maybe a little better, but not much. I've tried a ton of mixture screw settings, turning them in until it stumbles and then backing them out a half turn at a time. No matter how far I back them out, there seems to be no difference in idle speed, vacuum or the fast idle stumble.
The timing is set for smoothest idle and highest vacuum. I can't really trust my timing mark, but I think it's about 16*. The nipple on the spark advance is pointed toward #6 cylinder, or maybe a little to the right of it as you look from the front.
I don't know what kind of power valve is in the carb, but it seems to me like it's just running out of gas and my problem is either float level or pump pressure. Does it sound like I'm on the right track here or out to lunch?
