More DUI Problems

I feel I need to post this as I have been ignored in trying to get this fixed , I have multiple DUI Units at my Shop , and shake my head is all I can do , Was finishing up the first unit ( replaced weight and springs with premium pieces so the wont wear out prematurely and operate correctly ) the last thing I do is screw on the Rotor ( all HEI based Units and even the Old Point Types , based on GM advance need this checked ) AND after I do it causes the Weights to hang up , so I try another rotor ( off a Brand new DUI , WORSE !!!!, I do a bit of investigating and there are wear marks from the original weights trying to clearance them selves , went to my source for premium Ign Parts ( you would think for 350+ it would come that way ) and its an obvious the problem , the DUI Rotor is a POOR COPY , The Standard Ignition Part clears No problem , I check and ALL the DUI rotors, and ALL are like this , So now in order for these Units to be right its Recurve it ( all have 24degrees at 3000) How is that a custom curve when all 4 I have now seen are the same , BUT NOT the same Vehicle )so again its ,RECURVE ,By replace weights , Vacuum advances and the Rotors ( will also be scrutinizing the Caps ) on a BRAND New , 350.00 Plus Unit , NOT impressed

I had spoken with Faron on the phone the other night and he let me know about these problems and I'm really curious to see this all when it's out of the distributor. I was rather let down when I ordered the second one, sending a two page email going over different changes to the car, that it came with the exact same curve as the original one did. I have been lagging on getting my car running lately due to a lack of funds, and even contemplated selling her at a deep loss since she never got tuned in to run. :(

I know Faron isn't entirely fond of the D.U.I. system, but in my case it was almost my only real option with the smaller oil pump shaft. But with the modifications he's making to mine, I"m sure it will be more than worth it. I'm excited to try and get this car running now, especially knowing that all I have left to tune, really, is initial timing and the Carb. 8)

Agree 100% with Faron.
After my last recurve, I am updating my sun tester with all solid state electronics.
After the update $150.00 plus parts is what I would charge for a DUI curved to customers needs. At that price its still a bargain. They are that much of a pain to set up.
Go DS11 with a MSD or use a GM module with the DS11 for your ignition.

:bang:

Pretty sure mine is the brand new one and it just pisses me off they advertise about all the "custom" curve and all. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

Can't wait to get mine back from Faron. I am sure it will be the best it can be. If I had to do it again I would go with the DSII. Live and learn.

okay, so now that i spent the $BIG for the DUI, i'll have to send it out to have it curved? :bang: WTF gives? maybe should have stayed simple with the Pertronix set up?

They are still superior to the converted points system, but what faron is doing is making the ones he's worked on superior to the ones that haven't been dealt with.

Another gripe I have with the "kit" is the wires need to be about 2-3 inches longer. They don't allow fortiming adjustment very well .

All this is good information for Mike. He puts his trust in the DUI & they are not doing him justice.
I'm sure he will call performance distributors & tell them to correct the faults in their product.
They should come with an adjustable vacuum advance unit so the vacuum control can be adjusted. 15 degrees in the unit would be ok for the mechanical total.
They should install premium weights & plate.
Adjust the total centrifigul to 8 dist. degrees on one option & maybe 10 degrees on a second option.
Supply springs which will bring total centrifigul in by 2300 on one option & 2700 on a second option of springs.
Last but not least is install a rotor that does not cause weight binding.
All said and done I would still purchase the DS11 & get it curved per application.

Perry, for now make sure there is no interference from the rotor to advance weights to bind there movement.
You can be sure it still needs to be curved & the vacuum advance replaced with an adjustable one.
I am in the final stages of my sun distributor tester upgrade to all solid state.
Hope to have it up and running by mid week. It needed several diodes installed to eliminate the old vacuum tube. Also I replaced all the capacitors in the unit.
The choke coil was overheated so that has now been replaced. All i'm waiting for now is the resistor for the choke coil.
Replaced the drive wheel & bearings to the upgraded design. Bill
