OK, now that I KNOW it's a 200, I need FACTS for products

Hey gang. The car rolled off the carrier today a filthy mess, but nothing 5 hours of elbow grease couldn't cut through. I went over the entire thing and she sparkles nicely. Anywho, on to my point..

I crawled under the block to find me a casting # and count freeze plugs and to my elation, found 5 freeze plugs and a C8 casting number! SWEET! That means its the 200, right?? She's quite peppy!

SO...know that I know what motor i'm dealing with, I'm looking for straight up facts and part numbers if possible for what products I want to upgrade. i appreciate opinions, but for a weekend warrior mechanic like me, opinions leave room for error!

The car: '63 Falcon Futura Convertible w/'68 200, no PS or PB and generator still

1. dual master cylinder swap: which car's dual master is bolt on and plumb the lines? I've seen people suggest mustangs and mavericks etc. You tell me which and I'll buy it, but don't make me guess!

2. shock towers: I saw some chrome ones somewhere for a mustang I believe. I've also seen two different types: ones that are in my car (tall, tripod like with a center hole) and ones that have more of a slot at the top. Are these interchangeable? Can I use either type? Which cars have the same towers as my Falcon?

3. dizzie: based on what I've read, since i have a 200 block from '68 i should be able to drop in a Duraspark dizzie from later models, right? When I go the local parts store, what dizzie do I ask for (year and model and which motor?)? I have the MSD6A bolted to the fender and ready to hook up...do I also need the original control box?

4. fuel pump: I want something prettier and better. I'm dressing the engine well out for shows, so pretty is important. Even if it's just a stock (as opposed to a Holley or something) replacement, which model car shood I ask for.

5. front shocks. I need to replace mine. Which do I want?

there is a large tube running from my air cleaner into my firewall..? Is this some kind of breather for the tranny? Can I eliminate it with no real issues? If not, what do I do when I slap on my new chrome aircleaner that has no fitting for it?

Well, I guess that's it for now..I stress FOR NOW.

Thanks VERY much for all of the help. It's greatly appreciated!

congrats on the purchase. I'll answer what I can, though I don't know a lot about the falcons.

1) Think you can use a 1967 mustang dual MC for Drum Drum set up. Here is a guide: www.kastang.net/reference.html

2) They are called export braces...not sure if they are the same size fore 63 falcon as 65 mustang, even though the frames are similiar.

3) I assume you mean Duraspark 2? If so, just get one for a 77-79 fairmont/granada. If you have an MSD box, that's all you need besides new wires. they are different style posts from the stock dizzies

4) I personally like the 65 filter on pump fuel pumps. after that, they went to filter on fuel line style. Depends on your preference.

5) I love Edelbrock Performer IAS. Not sure if they make them for the Falcons. They are a great shock. soft at first but really stiffen up as you put the car through the paces.

Can't help you on the tube.

The tube into the firewall? Can you describe it a little more? Is it rubber, steel, ???, how large (in diameter)?

I don't think the export braces are the same thing. I'm talking about just the tri-pod like toppers that the top of the shock gets bolted to. They are independent of the fender to firewall brace.

it's fairly large tube (garden hose diameter) and rubber. it runs from the air cleaner assembly (like an aux nipple) into the firewall.

Were ALL dizzies for a 79 Fairmont DS2's?

63DropTop,

On the shock absorber top brackets, you should look for a spare pair and have them chromed, or you could go with a set of the custom stainless steel ones Harrie sells as part of his export brace/Monte Carlo bar set-up.
As far as the nipple from the air cleaner, that hose normally goes to a PCV on the valve cover. I would suggest you crawl under the dash to see where it terminates.

cool, who is Harrie? I want to do a Monte bar as well.

The air cleaner ALSO has a connection to the PCV on top of the valve cover.

the66mustang,

Look at my post a couple down about the tower brace kit from Harrie.

Bryce - I know you're trying to get as much info as possible, but the cross postings between TFFN and here are duplicitous.
:P :P :P

The nipple on the air cleaner normally goes to another one on the oil filler cap. The PCV hose connects to manifold vacuum at the the carb base.

Howdy Bryce:

Ain't this fun?

On the top shock brackets, the Falcon type are different then the Mustang. It is usually cheaper to convert to the shorter Mustang/Maverick, blade type shock tops and use Mustang shock, which are more readily available and cheaper than Falcon options. Several of the Mustang catalog sources list both painted and chromed replacements. Look for any shock listed for a '65 - '66 Mustang.

On the Air Cleaner consider having the stock top chrome plated, along with the stock Valve cover. It will cost a little more, but looks super cool, and much more durable then the cheap aftermarket stuff. Better yet , duct a cold air intake source to the Cleaner for a slight increase in power on a hot day.

Adios, David

welcome to the club. You can check out the link to my website for some (outdated) info on my experiences with the '63 falcon convertible. Here is my feedback on your questions:
1. Converted to a dual power MC. love it. got it from Todd Fields. He is super flaky about his business practices (sorry Todd...), but makes great stuff. There is a link on my website about it.
2. I think (think, not know...) that you can replace these with the ones for a mustang. This will give you a wider choice in shocks and all of the parts will be cheaper than those for the falcon. 3. Yes, Duraspark 2 from a '79 Fairmont. REbuilt at autozone or pep boys is quite cheap. Cost me about $190 to get everything (dizzy, cap, wires, coil, module, plugs). Made a HUGE difference. You can upgrade to MSD or whatever hipo module at a later date if you want to.
4. Don't know. went with a carter electric pump and a holley pressure regulator myself. Probably didn't need it, but it is the conventional approach with webers.
5. As for shocks, I have KYB but i suspect the edelbrock are better. The best, performance wise, are undoubtedly the Koni, but they are pricey.

On the fuel pump, you aught to try and find one of the glass top ones. I think they will work and one of the coolest looking. Especially if you clean it up nice and shiney. Maybe someone will chime in and give the real scoop on what they came on and how they work. The Falcons are cool and so many years with 100's of subtle differences leave you with tons of options for making yours your own. Good luck and send pictures...
