Over heating & pinging - NO MORE!!!

Put the timing light on the car, rev it up and tell us where it stops! 18* 20* 30* ?? If you are running too much advance, you will ping, and like they've been telling oyu , if you run too lean on the top end you will ping also.

Richening the AF mixture will also cool it off and make pre-ignition less prominent.

I wish I could tell you where to get jets for your carb. Watch your timing and leave the car at 3K rpm while watching it, does the timing continue to climb or does it back off after a few seconds?

i have tried the timing at 2* and it made it worse, then i tried at 12* and it seemd alittle better but not much, i then tried to guess 16* and there is improvement but again not much

That just seems wierd...I would not expect the pinging (aka valve clatter...if it's that) to get better with more advance. I would expect, as most have mentioned, that the pinging would be a symptom of over advance. I'm wondering about the conditon of your load-o...worn advance plate/springs...maybe time for a dui  :P

While the overheating you originally mentioned (now gone) would seem to suggest retarded timing, I'd also be a little concerned about the possiblity of a burnt exhaust valve.

Yay good news i'm pinging no more!!!

so i went to replace the vacum modual as it didn't seem air tight (nice that it's detachable) and found a broken spring, called up my local mustang shop and they had an extra spring ready for me, connected it up and wala... no pinging on hard acceleration.. now i can reset my advance to 12* or as far as i can until it pings again then back off to a safer spot...

for setting it how should i go about it?
like mentioned before- find a hill to drive up advancing it everytime?
or a different way not mentioned yet? i want to try different ways so i can get the best acceleration.

I'm so glad that i'm not going to have to change the jets, it seems almost a waste for this carb... i hope my mileage increases again...

Question- If I go to a DUI distributor and only want mechanical advance w/o vacuum what is the full advance rpm range i should aim for and will i have to set it or will it come that way?

Thank you all for your help...
Richard

Glad you got it!

Do the drive method. Set it to your desires base, then run it and see if it pings. Then advance it until it does. Then back it off 4 or 5 degrees for a safety margin.
