So.... I get my check tomorrow, and the stang's running. I am gonna change her oil, change the fuel filter, and re-attach the kickdown when I get up. I was also thinking about purchasing a pertronix ignition upgrade, since I hear they're grrrreat. Where should I get it from, just the parts house? Also, do I need a better coil in order to fully take advantage of the upgrade?

Why not a GM module and TFI coil, triggered by the points?

Sorry Addo, I say get the Ptrx I. It's only 80.00 or so. Then put the rest away and save it for the DUI from Mike. If you get the Fireblaster coil, you can still use it on the DUI.
Otherwise, get your DSII like Addo says.

yeah, I think you will be happier in the long run with a DSII than with the pertronix

Can I buy a DSII system new and install it out of the box? Also, the thing about that is I am using a carb with a SCV. I would like to keep my stock 1 bbl for now, which is why I plan on using the pertronix. If I switch to a 2 bbl, I will use a DSII for sure, but since this is my daily driver, I can't have it down for long. =)

Im not sure if you can buy a DS2 new. You may have to buy a rebuilt dizzy. You will have to make or get the harness from a junkyard (off any ford 74-80). Im not sure it can be done for $80 except from a yard. If you did do it that cheap new I dont think I would trust the quality of the parts.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Since I don't want to swap carburetors, I will use the pertronix for now, and then just go on the durability factor. I just wanna put some cruising miles on the engine, drive around, get stuff done, and build performance and really mod a different car. =)

The carb swap is not an issue since you can run the newer dizzys off manifold vac. Check out this thread, it has links with part numbers and pics. You can use the small cap if you have good wires and want to keep a more orignal look.

Well, I did Kstang's option #1 and I have only been happy with it. Pertronix with Flamethrower. It was relatively easy and the performance was significantly better than stock points. And it is relatively cheap, like the cheapest easy-to-do performance enhancer you can get.
A lot of guys here had bad luck with the Pertronix II. I have it and have not had any bad luck. But you might just stick with the Pertronix I. The difference is not really any big deal
If you like the fiddle factor, go with the DSII. I would run the Prtx while I was looking for a salvage DSII setup. That was my original plan, but now I am waiting for the Ptrx to conk so I can get a DUI -- but it might be a long wait.
