Performance Fan?

Slade:

What size is your fan? 17", 16"? How do you like the fit? Would you recommend getting a smaller fan than what you have now?

Is it possible to use the factory spacer with the flex fan?

I just picked up a spacer at autozone. too close to the radiator to put in a shroud, but with that much cooling power (plus a new radiator + thermostat i put in at the same time) I really don't need a shroud, so it's no biggie.

Scott,

I just ordered the flex fan for the 200CI engine. I got it from Mustangs Unlimited, so I'm unsure of the size. I have to problems with clearance. I also used the stock fan spacer with no problems.

I'm pleased with the performance. It helped my cooling issues but wasn't the problem. I had a bad radiator. At idle speed it draws some serious air across the radiator. You can feel the air being pulled. It held a shop rag to the outside of the radiator (just from the suction of the fan) with no problems.

If you want a quiet car...don't get it. It is much louder then the stock version, but after you get used to it it sounds good. I really like the looks of it. I'm going for a blue/chrome look for my engine...so it fits.

I don't know exactly what the HP requirements are for various fans, but I do recall seeing a dyno test in a magazine a few years ago. The big flex fans were the biggest hp losers, followed by the stock fan, then the clutch type fan, then an electric fan. The difference was as much as 14 hp, IIRC.

Those big fans may be costing you 8-10 hp (10% of stock power output).

Part of having more flow means you've got more resistance on the fan. But The flex fans also are made of lighter material and the heavy material is in the center.

Thanks Slade. I know Mustangs Unlimited sells the 17" blade, so that puts things into perspective for me.

I'm also going for the blue/chrome look for my engine. The only thing I don't like is the variety of blues that will be in the bay - but that's a whole other issue.

Hey, don't forget to update your website with pics when your done (or even while in progress). I love looking at members sites and yours always interests me since you have all the nifty installation explanations (the IAS shocks were the best).

Thanks for your help.

I will as soon as I get my computer back. I have all sorts of stuff coming up:

Engine/tranny Removal
Porting/Polishing
"Cobra Six" Mock up
Cam Installation

My better half has my laptop (which has the website on it and the software) and she is deployed for another week or so. So much fun...

I'll take a look at my fan and compare it with my ford blue engine and see how close they are. I'll put them side by side.
