primary distributor wire

The wire leading from the coil into the distibutor is coming apart at the hard rubber junction where the wire enters the distributor. Can I remove the junction or does it contain a resistor of some sort. I want to run a wire directly to the dizzy from the coil. Is that OK?

It should be a regular wire; I've seen that problem often enough myself on many cars. If you wanted to cheap out for a while, cleaning then a careful smear of black urethane sealant would do nicely.

Thanks Adam. I am down to just a couple of strands, enough to solder but
I am lacking confidence in the fix.

thatwire is just a wire. replace it with another of the same gauge or bigger. it allows the points to ground the coil.
