Rear main seal advice?

While I'm down here doing a clutch and ring gear in this '67 Mustang (200ci) I noticed the rear main is leaking a little bit of oil. I bought a new two-piece rope seal to put in, but I've never done it before so I wanted to see if anyone has any advice. I'm gonna do the oil pain gasket and oil pump while I'm under there too. Thanks guys!

Just me but i would have gone with the neoprene rear main seal. IIRC rope seal has a pin to hold it in place, just pull pin out, block hole with a spot of oil resistant RTV and install. You want to overhang the ends a little bit off the centerline of the caps so the seal ends dont line up with the main cap. That reduces chances of a oil leak.

The neoprene rear seal creates less drag and in my opinion lasts longer.

There was a large write up on this not too long ago. It'll take some time to find it because the search isn't working just right. Make sure to use thread sealer on the fly wheel bolts.

This is from a previous post, & it seals to perfection. Bill

Hope this helps, install the rear main seal with the ends at 10:00 o'clock on one side & 4:00 o'clock on the other side. Then put a small daub of sealer which you need to purchase at a toyota or lexus dealership. Its called FIPG. Put a small daub at the butting surfaces of the neoprene rear main oil seal. Before you put the rear main bearing cap in place place a very small bead of this sealer at the outer edge or lip where the rear main bearing cap contacts the block. Also place a very small bead from the seal to the outer edge where the main cap sits to the outer edge or where the cap contacts the block. Don't forget to place sealer on the flywheel or flexplate bolts to the crankshaft.
Using this procedure i have never had a rear main oil seal leak or even seep. This applies to fords & chevrolets, big block or small block with the 2 piece rear main seals. Bill

Where can I get the neoprene seal, and how much is it? I can return this $7 rope seal if I have to. I just want good, dependable leak protection.

Bill,

There is no Lexus dealer close by so what would be a second choice? I have to tear mine back apart and re-do it again :(

Do I need to get a new rear main seal or reuse this one? It only has 200 miles or so on it....

Artemis,

I picked up mine at my local Car Quest.

Felpro makes a neoprene rear main seal.

If you don't have a toyota or lexus dealer to purchase the sealer which by the way is close to $20.00 a tube.

Another option is use permatex ultra gray. I have used this sealer also for the rear main & the 4 corners of the oil pan gasket. Bill

Hey guys,

Does anyone know what to torque the rear main cap to? I finally had time to do this last night but when I got under I realized I didn't know the torque to the main cap.
