Okay, as some of you have been following my rebuild questions lately (especially, removal) I thought yesterday about improvements to my 200.

I plan on replacing the pistons rings (that's a given) but that was going to be it as far as touching the bottom end - then I started thinking...hmmmm...what else can I do while I have the pistons pulled and the block exposed? Well, not being very experienced I thought I'd ask the professionals.

What are the differences between the 200 and 250 as far as the lower half of the engine is concerned? Can I put in 250 journels to increase my stroke? Basically, I'm looking for ideas to improve the bottom end to help in creating more torque and horsepower.

Thanks guys.

How about a new cam? A nice 260 will still give you a nice smooth idle, but will definitely increase your power and feel of the car.

Just an idea.

That sounds good Slade. Now where can I get one. Crane Cams?

anyone know what the M and the N at the end of the comments mean, i think he skipped over some letters, maybe ill message az but that'd be alot of work

Howdy Chris and all:

Sorry, 250 cranks and rods are not interchangeable with the 200. Pistons are identical. Do I understand you correctly, that the engine block is still in the car? If it is, there's not much else you can do. Measure everything carefully while you have the chance, clean the crud off the piston tops.

Now if the block is out here's the possibe list.
*when machining, ie, boring, have the top of the block decked or milled to get it parallel to the crank center line, to true the mating surface, to increase quench and to reduce deck height. This may improve driveability torque, and knock resistance than any other single thing you could do.
*have the whole rotating and reciprocating assemblies balanced- both dynamic and static.
*if you expect to rev to 5,000 or more have ARP rod bolts installed when reconditioning the rods.
*be sure add a new timing chain and gear set.

Depending on your goals and your plan, this is the time to add an upgraded cam and new lifters.

A late model, heavier two groove damper may be/would also be helpful. Be sure to get the complete pulley set to match, both lower and upper. This could be done with the block either in or out of the car. Check for fan to radiator clearance.

Adios, David
