Rebuilt 200

Just rebuilt the 200 in my brothers mustang. Brand new carb, plugs, cap and wires. If i advance the ignition i get a popping sound at idle out the exhaust and the engine shakes on the mounts pretty good, but it runs really smooth when given throttle. If i retard till the noise in the exhaust goes away it has a slight stutter when you are cruising or giving it a little gas. At full throttle it is completely fine. Any ideas on what could be the problem should i leave the ignition advanced with the odd noise coming out and the shake?

I'm not the most experienced with this but I do beleive most of these engines have a mechincal or vacuum advance on them that advances or retards the ignition as gas is applied or let off. I assuming this is correct and just an idea, I would really wait on some of the more experienced sixers here to give you a better idea though.

A few questions

What year is this engine?

Does it have the Loadomatic distributor?

When you replaced the carb did you get the one needed to match a loadomatic distributor if you have one?

There are two different distributor/carb combinations depending on the year the mustang was built. They are not cross compatable.

The loadomatic distributor must go with a carb with a spark control valve.

New carbs have a timed vacuum port and go with distributors with a mechanical advance as well as a vacuum advance.

If you mix them up the car will never run right.

Good Luck

The problem is you need to use a timing light to nail exactly where you want it to be, like say around 10° BTDC as a starting point. The vacuum should be disconnected from the distributor and plugged at the carb for setup.

Sorry its a 65 mustang and we replaced the carb with a replica of what came on the car in 65. it has a vacuum advance. We set it with a timing light at 10 degrees. seemed a little off so i kept playing with it. I know its right around where it should be because under full load i can pull over and the spark plugs will be perfect some a little lean/richer than the others but obviously not too much advance. Just went out and pulled all the spark plugs earlier and found that one of the gaps was way off it was around .020 instead of .042. That helped took it out and it drove real nice get back and it starts making the weird popping again at idle and a slight stutter when i give it a little throttle while cruising again

Well after looking im almost positive i have the loadomatic distributor and the new carb does not have the spark control valve. What distributor would i need to get to get it to run right?

You would need a distributor from a 67 and after six cylinder to get a vacuum advance.

If you need to replace the distributor, now might be a good time to install a DSII distributor from the later 70's, or at least install a Pertronix unit in the old points distributor you find.

i thought 64 to 67 was loadomatic rock auto shows the same distributor for 64 to 67 then it offers a single and dual advance in 68? Still not sure what i need. What would it take to hook up a late 70's from a mavrick?

The all Ford parts setup uses DSII distrib, control box, coil, and even use the stock wire harness you can get it all from same car. Or use the DSII distrib and one of several other ways to trigger it with another control in place of the Ford box. Also the much later type E coil could be used too. Do a search through older posts to see what combo of parts you might like to try.
