I was driving along today and as always enjoying the ride.

I stopped for gas and filled it up. after a few minutes down the road I started to hear some pre ignition pinging and then a really strong smell of gas. I have had some pinging before and just used some octane booster to clean it up but I've never had the gas odor before.

I also only get the ping when I'm half throttle or more and I loose all kinds of compression.

anyone else ever get this?

Maybe you're losing fuel between the pump and the carb, then running lean? The other cause of pinging I know of is on dual advance dizzies, where the return springs for the advance weights fatigue and the car reaches full advance and stays there...

I switched to pertronix.

I went out and was messing around under the hood and started the car and waited. I started to smell the fuel around the air cleaner and through the breather on the valve cover.

still messing around,

went to idle mixture screw. took me about 5 turns to put it all the way in.
the ford shop manual says initial set up was 1.5 turns out.

so I went 1.5 turns out and the idle was rough. so I went out one turn at a time and with one more turn the idle smoothed out and the gas smell was gone.

I'm going for a test drive so I'll report when I get back.

okay gas smell is gone but still have the pinging so I'll dump some octant booster in and see if I can get rid of it.

carb has never been rebuilt,

and the fuel pump is brand new I just put it on when I rebuilt the engine about 100 miles ago.
