Stalls when hot

Okay summer weather is here again and its time for me to try to fix this problem again.
Whenever my engine gets up to almost the middle of my dash temp gauge the car would want to stall unless I put it in neutral. First the engine would surge then it would stall out.
I've had this problem for about 8 yrs and I think its about time I solve it. I've tried wrapping the fuel lines to keep the fuel cooler but that didn't help much. I'm sure I tried other things but I cant remember. Anybody have any other ideas?

Try this...

Look for an exhaust manifold gasket leak which may be blowing hot exhaust gases on your carb and causing the fuel to boil and vapor lock. A common leak location is under your carb at the the # 3 and 4 siamese exhaust port position. Look for black sooting residue as well in that area.

Also check you timing is correct at ~8-10 BTDC. No more or it can run hot IMHO.

my car used to do that..it was the piston rings. they are leaking oil a lil so the spark plugs were fouling. i put a spacer on the plug that had the problem and it didnt do it anymore..until my carb got screwed over..lol. look for some bubbles coming from the plugs. that might be the prob.

Exhaust manifold's been checked before and no leaks and I have my timing set perfect for this motor so I dont think its that. The carb does get a bit hot to the touch though so I'm guessing thats related or at least partly related.
I did find a little oil around the spark plug threads but the plugs were clean. Okay here's another symptom... The engine shakes a bit at idle but is fine when I give it gas. If I put it in neutral there's less shake. The problem gets worse when it gets hot.

Sounds like a possible vacumn leak-- also have you bypassed the carb plate yet so that hot water isn't flow through it?

my plug looked like i had friggin dipped it in oil.....ok, well maybe not that bad but it was rather dirty. if your plugs are clean then i guess.......check the timing maybe? your car sounds almost exactly like mine....my new carb gets here today so wish me luck!!!

Could it be running lean? Could cause it to run hot and shake at idle.

No vacuum leaks, carb plate doesnt have the hot water thing on it. I have a carter yf carb.
I'm pretty sure I have my carb tuned at what I think is the perfect setting but that's before the engine is hot like sitting at an intersection in 89 degree weather. Should I try to set the mixture when its hot?
I really think its a combination of things but I cant spot the main problem. Latest thing I found that helped smooth the problem was adding another inline fuel filter and rebuilding the carb. I found bits of rust clogging up the fuel filter to the carb. My gas mileage also increased after just the filter change from 14mpg to 18-21mpg. Cant believe that adding a new filter increased it that much.
Main reason I wanna solve this problem now is so that I can use my a/c more with no problems. My uncle thinks the a/c in his honda and porsche runs cold but they're both pretty weak even when compared to mine.

Well this is useful, I'm having a similar problem too.
I'm going to do the fuel filter tomorrow after work, and check for vaccum.
The other problem I have is:
Loss of oil pressure after about 10-20minutes of running, mainly when its hot.

Engines a '86 205(4.1) EFI job in a Fairmont '86.

(Sorry to hijack)

Well I partially solved the problem. I rebuilt my carb. It had some rust and junk in there. My car runs cooler and smoother but I can still feel that if I let it run hot it'll do the stalling thing again. I'm thinking maybe I'll have to put in an electric fan since the a/c stuff limits airflow especially at stops. The only thing is that my car is still far from overheating when it stalls.
