Hey all,

I've just brought home a D8 200 out of I guess a Fairmont, big log head and all that. Now way back in 1985 when I first bought my 66 'stang, the first thing I did was follow the Mustang Month;y article on how to put a 3.03 full sycro three speed in and get rid of the 2.77. I cant remember if the bell changed with the transmission or not - so will that set up bolt up? Somewhere in there I thought I read that Ford changed the bell housing bolt pattern. The performance six book isnt too clear or I've missed it.

Second, the oil pan is a different shape, with the main sump all the way astern and a bulge on the driver side under the #2 cylinder. Havent pulled it yet, but what is it for and will that cause any issues if I want to use the original pan?

Thanks

All 1966 up to 1981 (also most of the 1982's) 200 Six Engines will have the high mount starters and duel bell housing bolt patterns so yes all the parts, the larger bell housing, large flat flywheel, 9 inch clutch assembly, and 3.03 Trans can bolt right up to your 1978 block.

The oil pan, oil pump pick up tube, the dip stick and its tube (plus you also cap off the old hole with a soft plug), and the blocks motor mounts will all need to be swapped out for those parts off your 1966 200 then it's a bolt in. Best of luck. Edited

Your welcome char, and also welcome to the Ford Six forum! It's also a good idea to check out the condistion of the timing chain set while you have the oil pan off during the change over. Good luck on the swap.

The 78 will have an exhaust manifold with a 2" outlet instead of the 66 1 3/4" outlet. If you have access to the Fairmont get the cable throttle setup.
Mount the throttle pedal assembly an inch off the floor and you won't have to bend it to make it work. Use the 66 damper, water pump and pulleys and the alt brackets.
