I've finally decided to take my mustang to Washington from Nebraska, I would like to know anything you think would help me make this trip. I will have time to do some work to my engine. For one, i'd like to know where the best place to get an duraspark II is?? I've talked to some local places and told them the year and all of the information for the duraspark i wanted, but they only came up with off name brands instead of an actuall dura spark II. I've talked to both O'riley's and Auto Zone, we have a napa around i think, but i would like to know the best place to get one. Any other ideas besides for that would be good, i'm gonna do all the standard test, like vaccumn leaks, timing and carb setting for the drive. I'm gonna have my tranny fluid checked and see if there is anything wrong with it too. Like i said, i really need to get this to washington so i can get to work on my baby. Thanks again. Brandon

just thought of something, I have a 65' mustang coupe, with a 200 straight six with automatic transmission. It was rebuilt before i bought it and low miles since. Thanks again.

Go to a wrecking yard & pull the distributor, module & coil from a fox-body mustang or fairmont. Just make sure you get as much of the wiring harness as you can. Thats what I did. I just swapped the used equipment onto my '65 falcon & have been running it since. Good luck,
Edwin

get some caffine pills too cause thats a long-ass drive!

no doze....

stock up on some tunes too. Do you have acd player? we can suggest some driving music...what do you listen to?

Yeah, i'm planning on doing alot of checking up and looking over on everything. Those are some good ideas junk flacon, thanks. I know they were packed awhile ago and they would been replaced, it was one of those, i told him if it was bad, fix it. But i'll still defintely check them. My brake seals and axel seal were replaced then too. I will also bring water for sure. When i was last there, i was already starting to get it ready for the trip. I just went on joy rides and went further and furhter away. Went over 300 oneday, the only thing that had me worried is that the exhaust manifold would glow, but i've talked to some people about that and think i should be able to fix it easy enough. Only other thing is how fast i go, 65 sometimes sees alot  I've made this trip over 5 times now, the most recent i drove most of the way or was up for all but a couple hours. We did in two days, i plan 3 or more if needed. And for music, i listen to what ever. I'll bring a cd player and a deck to tape setup so i can play it through my car. thanks for your help

Howdy Brandon:

Wow! What an adventure. Will you go I80 & 84? Or do you look for back road adventures.

It may seem obvious, but check over your tires really well. If there is any doubt to there quality replace now. Do the same with your spare. Make sure your jack and handle are where they are 'sposed to be. Air up your tires to the max before you start, when they are cold. The tires will increase in pressure with road heat and elevation increases- Do not be tempted to let air out under those circumstances.

Nebraska and Seattle are close to the same elevation, but you'll see some 7,000 foot passes going over the Rockies. Plan for the ascents by slowing down, making sure your radiator is topped off and the bugs are cleaned out of your radiator. A bottle of water wetter or water pump lube is cheap insurance.

What is causing your exhaust manifold to glow? If you're tuned lean, that should actually help engine power at elevations above 3,000 ft. Is your initial timing retarded? Factory specs call for 12 degrees initial advance for a 200/auto. I'd be inclined to set it at 14 or 15 degrees btdc. And start with a set of fresh plugs, one step colder than stock for extended highway driving, and open the gap to .040". If you make the trip with your stock distributor, add a fresh set of points.

Bon Voyage!

Adios, David

CZLN6,
I haven't quite picked my route yet, i've dong all of those, me and my mom took some pretty good back roads one time too. Yeah, right now the tires are miss matched brands, so i'm sure that's gonna be one of my first jobs while i figure everything else out. I have a good sissor jack and a spare, i could even get two spares if i wanted (common tire size) And i used a can of fix a flat on my truck once and was actually impressed. It didn't seal it permentaly, but i got the leak in town and had now way of fixing it cause everything was closed and no open stores sold plugs, just patches. If i have time i'm gonna upgrade to a dura spark II and get all the new wires and plugs obviously. I should get my cooling system checked too. I recently replaced the thermostat but still just seems alittle weird, could be my heater core too. I changed out my 65' cluster for a 66' and the temp guage isn't very accurate now, thing barely moves. but thanks again for your help, i'll be sure and bring a bottle of that water wetter or pump lub. Do you know if the water pump goes bad on this easy, cause that might be another interest of mine then, might just do it if i can get parts easy. Thanks again

What part of Nebraska? That over 400 miles from one side to the other. I'm in the Southeast myself, so I'm almost in Iowa, 45 miles from Missouri. :D
Install a transmission fluid cooler. I just finished a 4600 mile trip to New Orleans and the Outer Banks. Cruised at 75+. Car ran cool through the mountains of Tennessee (I Know, they're not the Rockies). 8)
For long trips, nothing beats Cruise Control. If interested, I can e-mail pics.

i'm south east too, just outside of fremont, if you know that town. where'd you attach your tranny cooler? does you car sound like it's reved pretty good going that fast?

You're northwest of Omaha, I'm directly south. 8)
She purred like a kitten. :D
I used a large truck cooler in front of the radiator. It will fit between radiator and condenser when I hook up the AC. :D
