Water Pump too Short?

learnin alot from the site.
walked me thru a carb rebuild,
saved time & money - important for a guy's been unemployed (basically) since '09.
love these sm & lrg I6s!

There are only two pump heights for the 200. 4" and 4.75".

Short pump and matching single pulley were used with a 5-7/8" dia. single groove balancer. Rare as hens teeth was a double pulley and add on balancer pulley for an early two belt system.

Long pump and matching deeper double/triple pulley were used with the later 6-3/16" dia. 2 groove balancer.

If you use a later 2 groove balancer and a short pump pulley combo, you will have interference between the two, as the short pump single pulley is larger in diameter than the long pump's triple pulley.

Mike sells a small diameter double pulley for use with a short pump and later two groove balancer. This combo gives you a faster turning pump at idle, btw.

yeah!! That first (tall) pump is EXACTLY what I had!! Hard as HECK to find another one like that, haa..

No its not, I posted a link to one on amazon about a week ago. Not sure when they switched over but all the late 70s motors used the other water pump look up one for a 1979 Ford Fairmont with a 3.3

:hmmm: I think the trouble is in that he's buying pumps based on the year of his car 1965 to 75 (built before 4-12-75) mostly use the short pump but some of the early cars that had factory AC and or AIR (smog pump) will use longer W. pump too. The car may also have a later model 200 engine swapped into it and it has AC so needs to use the long pump to fit with his pulleys and other parts.

Yes, I get that. I just don't get what the problem is with finding the correct one. Anyone here could give him the part number to eliminate the issue of someone at the parts counter who doesn't know what they are doing.

OK :hmmm: Long style water pump 1978 up 200 3.3L GMB Part Number: 6603-07081699 OE Replacement Water Pump. Have had very good luck with GMB pumps but most good parts houses should be able to cross reference the part number to other brands. Good Luck

Hey guys, lemme tell yall bout my solution. Got a pump from a friend - it was the EXACT same pump that autozone, oriellys, and NPD had. Same casting, everything. Seems that someone installed an oddball pump on my engine. The engine (according to the casting numbers) IS a '65 engine. I have no idea what type of water pump was on there. I do know the casting was weird - used 3 long bolts instead of 2 long, 1 short bolt. At any rate... My friend gave me the pump, a flex fan w/ spacer, AND an open-element air filter. Looks awesome and runs even better. (Open headers are loud as HELL!!!!!)

echo? echo?
"...grab the casting numbers on your block to C what U got..."
add the accessories as per application of specific model

sorry 2 say it but as an employee in a big box prts house we can't look up cross references easily due to the requirement to use computers. I'm in the commercial dept (bout 1/4 - 1/3 of the buz's income, the majority is DIY) so aint too familiar w/it all but that's my understanding of how ^#!%-up it is these days.

Edit: Oh, OK, I C U got the Block numbers, excellent.
"...used 3 long bolts instead of 2 long, 1 short bolt..." wonder if that's not the motor instead?

I suspect someone used the accessory drive system off a late model motor in order to hook up AC or Power Steering. All the motors after 1978 used the longer pump.

I think you're exactly right. The PO owned an autobody shop and he probably had a ton of spare parts lying around, and just decided to bolt that up because it fits. Anywho... Got 'er done now!!

And that old pulley is so deep now I have a great little device for storing loose nuts and bolts ;)
