64 Falcon engine code help??

Hi all

Just pulled the engine out of a 64 falcon xm sedan which I believes to be a 170 engine but code makes me think otherwise ….. potentially, I’ve read that 200ci are rare but possible in this year model.

I found the engine code slides into the category of these 200ci engines on another thread so just wanted the check.

The code on the block is :C5DE 6015B

The first prefix also matches on the intake and exhaust manifold so I’m assuming all came together and is all original.

The only thing that points me back to the 170 is that on the intake it has ….

C5DE 6049A. 16B5. 170H

Maybe the 170H is a coincidence but I’m assuming unlikely, maybe this engine was just in between 64/65 and is a later example of 170?

Any help would be great,

Provide the code for the head and the block or use this from the Tech Archive.

Small Six Casting Numbers

  • The first two digits were the production year, the second two digits were the model.
  • The first digit (always a letter) was for the decade - C=60's - D=70's - E=80's
  • The second digit (always a number), was the production year.
For example: C3 is 1963 - C6 is 1966 - D7 is 1977 - E0 is 1980 - E2 is 1982

As above prefix falls under a 65/200ci

Does the block have an engine number stamped on a flat pad .
Left side ( looking forward)between fuel pump and oil pressure sender
Australian ford falcon blocks had the following serial numbers for 200ci
All ford Australia 200ci narrow block engines and from usa/ canada manufacture as ford Australia didn't manufacture a 200ci in Australia for xm and xp falcons - imported them.

If starts with
' RD' = xm 200ci.
SD = xp early 200ci
Or
200F= xp late 200ci.

As your block starts with a casting number of C5 it was 1965 American ( or Canada) supply.
All Australia manufactured engines start with ARC.

Other possibility is a Mustang engine - which won't have any above serial numbers stamped in.

Flat pad is about here:

Hi Thanks for the reply ,

has code

ARC5DE60115B

The ARC would be correct is the plant was in Victoria aus, and all the numbers match across the engine but it didn’t fit any other the 170 numbers I found on the forums but I think it may just be an exception and still a 170?

Like i said , Get the engine serial number ,its stamped in.

The ARC number is the block part number and is part of the casting- not stamped
