Coating Issues

Had my header coated, sent it back for a defect, received it back and bolted it on the car and now, two months later its bubbling off at the collector? Jet Hot said it was heat related (doh!) and to ship it back. I told them I could understand it if it was at the head, but the collector? Maybe my exhaust is too small? 1.75" all the way back from the collector. Or maybe a rat got in there while the exhaust was disconnected for the rebuild? Pressure at the tailpipe seems to be fine. Any suggestions? The thing sure was pretty while it lasted.

Ron, sorry to hear about your bad experience with jet hot.
My header still look good, yes it does loose that brilliant look after a year.
I run 2" dual system from the collectors back.
You might want to talk to a supervisor & maybe he can help you with your problem. Bill

your collector has the six slugs hitting it. it's collecting the heat too

is that one 1.75 or two?
if it's one, regardless of the peeling . you have to free that exhaust up.
you'd be better off with a stock manifold splitting to a dual exhaust.

Ron,

Ceramic coatings are good up to 1700* which should be more than adequet. If the coating is flaking, then you need to check your exhaust temps. Causes are usually from a lean A/F mixture and/or improper timing.

Purchase or borrow an Infrared Temp Gun and check the temps. Prices range $75 bucks and up. Unfortunately the cheap versions don't reach the temps needed. The PE-3 Temp Gun ($75) will sense readings from 76F to +1000F, or with the thermocouple jack (included) -83F to +2500F .

If you have any problems with Jet-Hot let me know, as I may be able to help. I'm pretty good friends with the guys in the Arizona branch. You should have sent it to me to have it coated, as I get them done for less $$$, and never have a problem if they need re-coating.

The collector is going to be cooler than the closer to the head as you thought. If their coating is coming off, it likely was not prepared and cleaned properly or cured improperly.

I shopped around and bought an IR gun that goes up to 1562 deg F so that it could read exhaust gas temps.

Fellas,
Thanks for the replies. My issue is not with the company as they are willing to fix it and I'm thinking the real issue is something wrong with the motor.

Mike: Thanks for the offer :D

I'm sure this will work I just cant figure where the flippin' heat is coming from! If you read some of the earlier posts on the new engine, I DEFINITELY had the timing way too out of whack. It was covering up something else. Timing is back at 12* with the smaller of the two gaps (13*) for the advance. The vacuum advance is brand new (X2). Head is not dis-colored. I'm thinking the exhaust is messing it up. Again, the company is probably not the issue.

Running sufficiently retarded timing will excessively heat the exhaust as unburned fuel combusts in the tubing.

Bah! Bort, you are killing me! So now I may have it too retarded? Crud, the balancer is right on. I put the springs and weights in the distributor, back in as bought. Timing is set at 12* initial. Carb is changed, although I really need to work the linkage in. Jetting maybe. Geeze, I've put together two V8s, one Pontiac and one Olds, with less trouble. Of course that was when I was much younger and smarter (or thought so). Take a couple more days to think this through. Grrrr! Supposed to be working on the body now!
