extended tip spark plugs

Does any one know the part numbers for the extended tip plugs they recommend in the Performance Handbook? I currently use NGK WR5 plugs. Does NGK have an extended tip plug? Also would I see any increase in performance by using a performance coil? I am using a Ford TFI coil with my MSD 6a and Dura spark distributor. Is a MSD coil any hotter than a Ford TFI coil?

Howdy back larry:

The extended tip plug idea developed by Smokey Yunick and Champion was so successful that it quickly became the standard for the industry. Different plug manufactures stole the idea and called it something else.

So, when shopping for plugs-
*If you change plugs often, buy the cheapest and compare brad to brand for the most extended tip.
*If you don't change plugs often, the harder tip materials last longer, but are at least that much more expensive. All that advertizing costs. I don't about NGK plugs.

Thanks David I guess I'll stick with the NGKs. I had good luck with them in a old F250 that I used to have. Do you know if the TFI coil is any worse than using an aftermarket coil?

You have a top-notch ignition already. The only thing you would notice with a fancy coil is a lighter wallet.

I admit to - even now - a lingering resentment about this. As a cashed up young'un with my first car, the temptation was there to buy a BIG, CONSPICUOUS coil. ³

Sadly, I made the mistake of asking a greybeard if this was the best thing to do - and he told me the truth. So I never got my fancy coil.

Maybe one day I'll buy one, even though I know it'll be of no benefit.

Don't feel bad, the Irish in me has always coveted those big, beautiful Accel Super Coils®. But then my thrrrrrrifty Scotch nature rises up and says "Whatt ye be needin' THATT ferrr, boye?"

Heck, get a Fosters' can, paint it bright yellow, put an ACCEL sticker on it, drill a hole in the top and mount it over your perfectly good existing coil.

Best of both worlds!

Larry, my top choice is made by NGK WR51X, this is an irridium tipped plug. The cost is about $6.00 per plug.

Another choice is the Autolite AP-46 which is an extended tip single platinium plug. The double platinium is the APP-46.

The next choice is a plug made by Nippondenso is the Accel 378, the colder version is the 375.

The NGK WR51X has the pin irridium center electrode for easier firing & no errosion from a hot ignition.

All the plugs listed will give you top performance.

Maybe I have a negitive view, but I would not recommend Bosch plugs in anything but a Bug VW. William

Actually....Bosch used to be good a few years back,
but then got a bad rap from being so cheap (cheapest at many stores)

If you run an MSD, it'll fire 'em for sure.

AP-45 are still available
(just a little cooler)
