I have a Sprint 200 in my 66 Mustang. It has an Automatic Tranny that is acting up. I am hoping it will crap out and I can replace it with a Manual. What is a good/cheap replacement tranny??? I have heard a T5 done before, but us a good 4 speed good enough?? Also, what about turbo's on these older cars. I have never heard of this done before, where can I read about this??? Thanx for the help,
Matt

I have yet to sit down and scan it for posterity, but there's an article in a '78 Motor Trend abouta 200-6 Granada with Turbo and a 4-speed.
There's an SROD for sale in the classifieds right now, if I hadn't gotten my T-5 I would've made an offer on it.
Check out Al's swap/bellhousing stuff on www.inlinepages.com.

what is the tranny doing to be "acting up"?
i'd say that it is almost a unanymous ... anonymous ... unimanous ....... :x
i'd say that everyone that has done the T-5 conversion is happy with it... (sheesh, was that so hard to say?) there are a few on here that have the 4-spd i believe, but it doesn't have that 5th gear overdrive, which is nice to have on the highways
as to the turbo, check out the hardcore inline tech section, there are plenty of people using all types of various power-adders

if you look around, you should be able to find a good T-5, but, except for the 5th gear, i don't think there is any big difference from a 4-spd

good luck

Another good thing about the T-5 is the low first gear on the 4cyl model. You can launch your car a lot harder without a rear gear change. The 87-93 four banger T-5 had a 3.97 first gear; some earlier turbocoupe T-5's had a 4.01 first. Makes a 2.79 or 2.80 rear end not so bad.

The SROD is an overdrive transmission; the lower gears seemed like good 'cruising' ratios. Since I mainly do longer trips I wanted the .70 overdrive. But I got that T-5 instead. :)
I had a RUG Srod on an old 4-banger Fairmont wagon and I liked it, simple tranny with 200K on it and no bad gears (I opened it up when I got it). It took a beating (the head was cracked on the car, so I just kept my foot to the floor all the time  )...0 to 60 was about 10 minutes but once I got it to 80 I wouldn't slow down for anything...back roads or main roads!
It was so ugly and belched so much smoke that the cops just ignored it...for about a year... then they made me get rid of it...

P.S. Cops REALLY don't like it when you leap out of the car with a fire extinguisher when they stop you going 85. ... "But officer, when I drive slow the fire starts getting close to the carb!"

I appreciate the help. The trouble is that is will go through first gear like it really isnt there, you have to pay attention to even tell it started out there, then it take a short trip through 2nd and when shifting into 3rd it revs real high and shifts hard, but I dont hardly go anywhere. Its like if I had a manual, I didnt let off the gas when I clutched to shift. Its retarded and only does it occasionally. At first I thought it was just when I was goin slow, but then it started doing it when I would get on it. Now its doing it when I go slow again. What really sux is it wont do it when I try to show someone. I think I will just drive it till it is unbearable and then switch to the T5. Maybe the tranny will quit and I can get some help from my parents, lol, yeah right. Other than that, I have some dual outlet headers coming my way which will go to 40 series Flows and I am looking at that Aussie head maybe by the end of the summer. Again, I appreciate all the help, I am sooo glad I found others working on their sixes instead of swapping to 8's.

Heh Matt, Sounds to me that you have a vacuum modulator issue, either the vac line going to it is bad, or the mod isn't working. It is in the back of the tranny on the passenger side bottom, there is one bolt holding a clip that holds the mod in. You should channge the hose going to it as well as the mod., there is also an adjustment in the end that the hose connects to, deep inside, you insert a small screwdriver and turn the screw in small increments, either clockwise or counter, to raise or lower the shift points. good luck

Hmmmm, vacuum huh, sounds like a good lead. To bad its raining out there right now or else Ide go take a look. Man, this forum is very helpful!!! I have another few questions as well and will post them again in their own topic, but what should I do about a good air filter. I see some people running K&N, but non will fit. Does anyone have any suggestions. Also, I am looking into a different way of cooling the engine. Which should I look into, a flexfan that goes on the motor, or an electric fan on the radiator??? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! Thanx again for all the help,
Matt

check this thread out for cooling info
http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=34696#34696

as for the air-filter, most of the guys that have pics have a custom setup, something they fabbed out of the original housing, and spare sheet metal, try just clicking on people's websites and wandering through them, you should find a few good ideas
and as for K&N, you can order a certain size, you just have to tell them what it is, how big the carb hole is, how tall, etc. and they should be able to give you the cost

good luck

Well, im workin on the K&N, also, with the tranny, I said screw it, if it wont shift right, Ill shift for it and it never used to do very well like that, but now its great!!! Also, my exhaust pipe isnt attached to the manifold, whoops  , so I think I picked up some power cause it will downshift automatically by itself and it used to be a dog to get to do. I am very happy with my car right now, needs a tune up and the exhaust to come in so I can get it goin, but I am glad to have found this place to find more and more great ideas to work on!!!
