Keeping your 2 bbl carb & fuel cool??

This only applies if you have converted to a 2 Bbl....

How hot is too hot?? Being my holley fuel bowl is hanging right out over the header, sometimes it gets so hot you can only lay your hand on there for just a couple of seconds before you get burnt.

I realize that the fuel is constantly moving through there, but would it be a good idea to make a heat shield that will go between the carb and the intake to block off the heat??

Not a small one either....say some aluminum sheet around 8"x12" square??

Some of my steel fuel line is also hangin out over the header. Can that be wrapped with somthing like aluminum foil, then covered up with that black wire loom cover so it looks nice??

I also bought and am going to install one of those clear sigght plugs so I can check the fuel level....I never could check the level being the hot header was always right there under it!!!

Not a bad idea. I had to put one on the Mustang to keep the heat out of the intake duct and off the throttle cable. I actually melted one cable just from radiant heat.

I'll take a couple of pics of the one I'm going to make tomorrow. I just thought it might be a good idea to make one, and get peoples opinions, especially with as many guys are converting to 2 Bbl carbs.

Here's what I come up with (picture heavy)

The fuel bowl and carb stays very, very cool to the touch now....even after idleing for 15 or 20 minutes, so I would assume that the plan worked!

Quite a few of you guys have been bugging me for pics of my shop after I finished remodeling it using your guy's ideas.....

Once again....thanks for all your guys help and putting up with all my bizzare ideas!!

Hey Doug, nice shop... I especially like the air filter idea for the ventilation unit. I'll bet that works like new money at keeping the dirt out. Gonna use that on my own shop. :D

I am planning to run a heat shield like you made but I also want to run a Fuel cool can. Fill it with ice to refrigerate the fuel.

No you cant run around 24/7 with ice in it but it would be good for dyno days and taking it to the track.

Thanks!

All that is, is a louvered wall fan that I built a box around and installed a furnace filter in it. When I turn it on, I open up the window behind the drill press and it creates a major draft across the shop!

Then if I want to paint, I have another furnace filter that goes in the window, and a drape that goes across the shop cutting it in half to minimize the cleanup :D :D

Glad ya like it!

The shield only took a couple hours to make....I fabbed it up out of cardboard 1st, then after I got it all to fit, I just transferred it over to some aluminum sheet and cut it out with my jigsaw.

A cool can works really good at the track!! I used to have one on my Challenger I used to race.

It kinda looks like mine, only yours is tidy, well lit, and has a lot of parts, tools and manuals ....other than that it pretty much looks the same!!!! :?

Alex

Doug, thats a nice shop you have! Heat has not been a problem for me. My float bowl faces the front, and most the heat from the header gets sucked out the back of the tear drop hood scoop. That heat shield is a good idea. Have you eatin any rice lately? Russell

you classic stang guys might not have enough room, but i have been making spacers out of 1" birch plywood and believe me that really gets rid of heat.

Thanks Russell & Alex

Bill,

Does the plywood "delaminate" after awhile because of the gas?? Several other people have told me in the past to try the plywood, but I never did because of this question?? Do you have to use gaskets inbetween the plywood or not??

On another note, (for anyone wanting to try this) Just make sure that you make the holes big enough in the aluminum plate so that the carb throttle plates dont get stuck at WOT..... :?
