i may have my hands on a 351 windser and trany soon and if i do ill put it in my mustang ... i put this in the mustang forum too but do any of you guys know if theres a kit or something ill need or would it be just a pull and drop job ... ill have everything for it too because its comeing out of an old thunderbird :)

thanks guys

Several things have to be changed to get a 351 into an I-6 Fox body. First, you will have to swap the K-member for one from a V8 or I4 car. They are different.

Next, all the different peripheral things like fuel lines, throttle linkage, exhaust, cooling, wiring, ignition, etc have to be replaced or reworked to fit the new engine.

Finally, the 351W is a tall engine. If you use an aftermarket manifold and aircleaner, you may find yourself in need of a cowl hood.

This is another case where it's better to start with a V8 car.

I had to the thought of dropping a 289 sometime back, but after looking at what I had to do, I didnt' have the money plus it would devalue my car. There is too much involved when swapping a I6 to a V8. Basically put, the whole under carriage has to be replaced, brakes, axels, wheels, differentials, etc... There is too much involved in my opinion. If you got the money and time, go for it man. As long as you keep it fast!

It isn't so much that it devalue's the car, but it doesn't add value, so it is lost money.

Lots of work and parts...I honestly looked at it right when I got the car, before i did research into the swap and figured out how much it would cost. I figured I'd just buy a V-8 car if I really wanted on in the future.

Cobra Six hit the nail on the head. Buy a V-8 with a blown motor and sell yours. It will be cheaper in the long run.

IT is definately NOT a pull and swap. Follow the others suggestions and you will be happier and will have alot less headaches later on

We are not trying to diswade you, just do some research into how much it will really cost (the engine is the cheap part) and compare that to buying a V-8 one. I'm not against V-8s, just swaps are very rarely a good investment.

heres a swap for ya thats been rolling around in my head. Im in the process of buying a 1987 supra turbo w/ a 3.0 litre turbo-charged inline six. stock it puts out around 230 h.p. and plus i would still be "in-line"

Dang, I am not sure about all of you, but I looked at swapping in a V8 and I could have gotten a new engine and T5 with gears plus the steering and brake upgrade, wheels and tires, and some other performance goodies.....

And Guess what....

Probably would have spent the EXACT SAME AMOUNT!!!! :D :D :D :D

Maybe less

Who knows, but I love my six and it was worth every penny...
Or it will be once it is on the road again, soooon.

But honestly, I know I will never get what I put in back, but I don't plan to sell anytime soon.... my scars must either fade or be removed first.

I am never complaining when I state that I spent more on the six than I would have a Cheapo V8, I LOVE THAT.

Honestly, it's entirely up to you, but I say find a V8 car and start there, at least honor the six that is was.

Jimbo is a right thinking kinda guy. I bought the 66 for my 16 year old son. If he's good he might get it when he's 45. I have too much fun tinkering, checking, researching and driving the car. As for the 6...I just let the 8's rant. Hell I get 26mpg with the T5! My buddy just spent $55K on a 981 points 57 Chevy and is afraid to get it out of the garage. If ya cant drive it...then let the bank have it! Firetox...if you are committed to the V8 then can I have 1st dibbs on your six?

This is sooo sad. In Australia, V8 and six cylinder engine bays have the same fittings. Frame mounts, transmission mounts, diffs on most versions, radiator hose postion, steering gear, brakes, five stud wheels were all the same mostly...Falcon six to V8 swaps are a cinch from 66 to date. The up-option for 170/188/200/221/250 I6's were 289's and 302w/302c. The later big daddy 351's didn't even get a nine inch diff.

Unlike the US stuff, the V8 swap usually never over taxed the differential because a Salisbury 7.625" or 7.875" Borg Warner 78 diff car (on every less than 351 cubic inch from 1967 to 2002) could hang together quite well. And the bigger disc brakes were straight bolt ons. The ecconmies of scale for the Aussie Falcon, selling less than 65 000 cars per annum, in some cases, ment everything was unified.

But the Aussie sixes were more than 80% of Falcon production since the first 289 2-bbl and 4V 289 XR GT to the latest 5.4 BA GT quad cammer.

The amount of work you guys have to make a swap to a V8 is a real killer. If you want V8 grunt, sell your six and get one. A six is a six, and V8 conversion will never be a K-code 289 or 5.0 GT, :) no matter how well you modify it.

Speaking from personal experience... ...the engine swap is not easy or cheap. Yes, I have found a few bargains but would I do it again...NO!

P.S. I'm still not done.

lol ... no you dont .. its weird .. 1st and 2nd pick up ok but 3rd and 4th are for highway, low low rpms and from 2nd to 3rd is like a 2000 rpm drop

my dad and i are putting a v8 in his mustang. So far it hasn't been hard or expensive. The 302 and T5 tranny cost $400. This afternoon, in about 2 hours wee took out the old tranny and 170, the k member put in the new one and drilled the hole were the clutch will go. my dad's mustang was originally an automatic. I ordered the tranny mount kit forthis tranny and the hydralic clkutch kit. $125 shipping and handling included. all the other modifications we had to do like the suspension sdtuuf was done when we first got the car. We put five lug front disc brakes and a corresponding 5 lug nine inch. $200 buck for both. this only amounts to $725. That's fairly cheap considering it's and all around modification of the car. in total, it will only take about 8 hours. anybody want it done, calmme up i live in L.A
