Would it be a good idea to swap over to msd ignition, my car comes from the factory with electronic ignition.

Are the wastegates on most turbos adjustable? i plan on getting one from a junkyard or on ebay. is a mitsubishi TEO4H a good turbo for a 225 ci motor?

can you run a choke on a carb with a blow through turbo?

do you run a blow off valve at the same psi as your wastegate is set at?

Yes on the MSD.
Yes all of the W/Gs are adjustable if you use a boost controller. It basically fools the wastegate to open later by either bleeding off some of the pressure in the sense line to the W/G or waiting until a set point to be reached then opening up and allowing the pressure to reach the W/G. Some of the external W/G are mechanically adjusted. e.g. Deltagate.
A blow off valve is actually set up to be lower than boost pressure. The BOV runs off of both pressure and vacuum. Under boosted conditions the line the goes to the top of the BOV is also under pressure thus it helps along with the spring to hold the valve closed. When the throttle plate are suddenly closed, the motor goes from boost to vacuum. Now that same line is under vacuum and the other side of the valve is now under very high pressure so the valve is sucked and pushed open. Does that make sense?

this build is gonna be on the cheap, so where can i get a blow off valve and how much are they? i was thinking about using a radiator cap as a blowoff valve, but im not quite sure how that would work with the vacuum stuff you were explaining.

im having a hard time finding carb hats. any suppliers you guys recommend?

what ignition do some of you turbo guys run?

thanks for the links guys. im no stranger to ebay, believe me. many dart parts have came my way from ebay.

so heres what im thinking (none of these items have been bought, just a planned set up):

to4b turbo (from ebay)
holley 350 (ebay)
carb hat
j-pipe from exhaust manifold to turbo
stock fuel pump referenced for boost
some sort of blow off valve mechanism
hoses and pipe from turbo to carb

what am i leaving off?

now some of my questions
1. are most of these turbos oil and water cooled?
2. where do you guys run a line for boost referencing? from the carb hat?
3. a j-pipe? im guessing ill have to buy a j pipe and cut it and fab it up to my needs, right? my local exhaust shop didnt seem to be able to get (or were to lazy to look for) a flange to run from my exhaust manifold when i put larger 2.25 in exhaust on my car. anyone know a source for something like that? what size pipe should the j be? the opening on the exhaust manifold is about 2 in.
4. a choke is fine to run right? but how do you seal up the holes where the rod passes through that the chokes is attached to? or do they need to be sealed to keep from losing boost?
5. what have you guys done on the intake side of the turbo? pipe running towards some cold air and a k&n cone filter?

sorry for all the long questions.

also, im looking and pricing msd ignitions. trying to decide between a 6a or 6al. is the rev limiter option a good idea on a turbo car?

Just wondering what you had in mind for an exhaust manifold. What were your plans for that?

Dart Swinger,
Just use a mandrel bent "U-bend" for the J-pipe. Summit sells them. Although they don't sell the good 14gage stuff that would be better.

If it's just a street driven car then the MSD 6A will be fine. Or get the MSD BTM (Boost Timing Master) box. This allows timing to be pulled out in reverence to the amount of boost.

Your list of stuff if missing a wastegate. Get the Deltagate. Should be some on Ebay. They are relatively cheap and work well for lower HP motors.

All turbos use oil for lubrication. I wouldn't call them oil cooled. Some are water cooled however. And some turbos use a reservoir of oil contained within the turbo for lube. This makes it easier to install because there's no oil lines to deal with.

Use a vacuum line below (after) the carb for boost referencing.

I would delete the choke. The hole in the carb for the choke rod will have to be filled. I personally used the plastic "slide" that goes there normally and filled it with JB Weld. Works fine.

For the intake side try and get some cool air to it. We just put a K&N cone style filter attached directly to the turbo. But our turbo sits right up front so it's getting air from the front. If you mount the turbo to the rear either make some piping to reach the radiator support or suck air from under a cowl scoop or something.
That should do it,

does the wastegate have to be purchased separately or would it come with the turbo in some cases? if buying a turbo off ebay, would the factory wastegate be adjustable?

on ebay, when u do a search for to4b, many turbos come up with alot of different car company names on them. would any one of these work?

i plan to run a line to the turbo for oil from where the oil pressure gauge hooks up and t it off. then i was going to put a 5/8" drain line back into the oil pan.

how does the absence of the choke effect cold starts, since this is my daily driver?

a j-pipe will connect the exhaust manifold to the turbo and ill have to fab something up for support.

where would i put a boost referencing line after/below the carb?

thanks guys

As far as I can remember. The Mitsu turbos are both oil and water cooled. You may want to look for a Toyota TD03/4 Turbo if you want just oil cooled. A Garret CT26 is stock for the MKIII Supras that have a 3.0 Inline six motor. You might also be able to use alot of the other parts froms something like that. I think the Toyota All-Trac Turbo is a smaller version(all-trac is a 4 banger)

BTW...I can get ya an All Trac Turbo if you are interested. I have one sitting on a buddies parts car. May cost more for that than an ebay turbo though.

would a mitsubishi tdo4 or a mitsubishi teo4h be a good turno for a 225 ci engine? they are plentiful and cheap so i was curious about them. would their built in wastegates be adjustable to my needs?

Stock wastegates are not adjustable, all you would need is to buy a manual boost controller. basically you take the stock vacuum line that runs to the wastegate run it to the boost controller, then run another line from the boost controller to the wastegate. on the boost controller is simple know turn one way for more boost the other for less. The controller bleeds off to the wastegate so the valve opens at what you have it set at instead of a pre-set boost level.

Then theres the spring inside of the wastegate you can fool around with for more or less boost. harder spring for more boost and vice versa
Hope that helps some
