motor mounts

Some how the air cleaner wing nut pushed up against the inner side of my hood and left a big dent. I originally thought this might have happened when I jacked up my car to change a tire a while ago, but a friend of mine seems to suspect a bad motor mount. I have noticed a shutter/vibration when I put the car in reverse, but I do have the idle speed set high. I can also feel a steady vibration, about once per second at 45 MPH. I have read this repair is rather expensive and that motor mounts on most cars are not easily visible, and it's even harder to tell if they are worn or broken by sight. Any ideas?

Lift the lid, and get a friend to stall the car up while you watch the motor.

It will heave up and sideways if a mount is broken. Quite easy and quick to fix on a six cylinder car. The dent repair may be more grief - possibly a "paintless" type effort will work.

Motor mounts are nice and easy on a 6, just changed both of mine last weekend for about $28 and 28 minutes of time. J
