Need help asap!

Ok, my daily driver (2007 Mustang GT) is having brake issues. So, i'm trying to get my 66 road worthy asap. I believe the issue with the 66 is that the automatic choke in the holley carb is screwed up. I understand that I can just open the choke up manually and just leave it that way to drive it. Here is what i'm thinking:

Close carb (almost all the way) to warm the car up in the morning. Open it up and drive to work. Will this work?

Depends on how the Auto is setup, but yes you should be able to do that. Just beware about the first couple miles, you can easily end up stalling and being in a bit of a pickle.

Don't know if your car is setup with a block heater, but if so you could plug that in at night and it would help out by keeping the engine warm, thus the car would start easier. If you don't have a block heater, you could always put a naked light bulb or two under hood (I would likely leave one on the intake manifold next near the carb but not directly next to it, and the other close to the radiator) and leave them on at night, just be sure you remove them before starting the car.
Of course, if you don't have a garage, it will be hard to do either of these.

I was talking to some of the mechanics at work and they seem to belive (i'm not sold on this) that if I put a connecting rod between what I think is the throttle linkage and the linkage going to the spring that will help too.

almost like putting a stronger connection between those linkages. Sorry I don't know the names....

In your picture It's got all the linkage parts that it needs. so you need to look on the other side of carb at the choke stove and choke cover parts.

I had planned on replacing the choke, but I can't seem to find the parts. Any suggestions? It's a Holley 1100. Thanks guys!

Well it's a Holley carb but it's a 1946. Most bigger parts stores should have those parts like NAPA etc. and probably on line also. Good Luck

I was thinking about trying to clean the bimetallic spring before replacement see how that goes. I understand if I mix 5 parts water to one part white vinegar it will eat any rust and soot off. I was told I can let it sit for 5 min then I have to rinse it off or it will corrode. Any experience with this?

Look for a product called Evap-O-Rust. A little expensive, but it definitely completely removes all rust.

:D Check the "Help"section in your local parts stores,OR hit the salvage yards.IIRC,any 12 volt
electric choke (plastic cover assy)should fit and work ok.If I am wrong, someone PLEASE correct me.Thanks.Oh by the way.Use the stator lug on your alternator for the power source for the choke.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Woodbutcher, the carb in question uses a bimetallic spring, it's not electronic. Thank you for the help though!

and if you can figure out how to get it to kick down, let me know. Great carb when warm, much better than the 1100, but I have yet to figure out how to adjust the kick down to where I want it.

Kickdown on my car was adjusted at the cable between the throttle lever and the kickdown switch on the transmission

:D Hi Nick.Electric choke uses a bi-metallic spring.Electric choke has power to it all the time that the engine is running to keep the spring heated so that the choke stays open when driving.
When the engine is shut off the power is shut off to the choke, and the spring cools re-closing
the choke. As i stated, the stator lug provides the power to operate the choke ONLY while the engine is running.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Ok, I tried to find a replacement spring and have thus far been unable. I contacted Holley about it but they need the List Number of the carb. I won't have access to the car for a few days (hurricane coming). Does anyone know the List Number for the carb, so I can get the part number, so I can order the part? Thanks guys, much appreciated!!

Actually the choke plate gets locked open. It will not close again until the engine is completely cool and the accelerator pedal is pressed and releases it.
